12th December 2009 - 14th December 2009:
We had to catch an overnight train from KL to Singapore, however due to our new found spontaneous nature instead of booking a week in advance we left it until the day before travelling (so crazy we know!!) to book the tickets - ok well not really that spontaneous in the traditional sense but it is for us.
However this decision backfired somewhat and left us without our preferred choice, which was the comfortable second class cabins, and meant we were left with either travelling on a 12 hour train journey in terribly uncomfortable conditions i.e. s***e class, or pay for an overpriced first class cabin with our own beds and shower.
Yes you guessed it, in our own flashpacker way we ended up plumping for first class and yes you guessed it that is the end of Mr & Mrs Spontaneity for the remainder of this trip!!
Unfortunately for us first class did not quite live up to expectations due to the combination of an overzealous air conditioning unit blowing out nothing but freezing cold air and being unable to find a train attendant - despite having the "call attendant" light on for the entire night - to turn it off. Despite this we did attempt to sleep but Sean struggled due to the constant noise of Liza's teeth chattering and reluctantly (well I did pay for my own bed!!) offered Liza some body warmth and meant we ended up sleeping top to toe in a very cramped bottom bunk bed - not quite how first class travel should be!!!
Just like KL we only have a couple of days to see Singapore but this time decided to explore the city/country by foot rather than take the bus tour as everything seemed to be relatively close.
Singapore is amazingly clean, there is literally no litter anywhere and quite different from most of the other Asian cities we have visited. Thankfully it was a really easy city to navigate around, although not quite as close as we originally thought, and meant we found ourselves walking for hours on end - thankfully the fabulous shops helped ease any foot ache we might have felt!!!
On our first night we decided to hit the Zoo for the Night Safari which was really good - the animals are not kept in traditional enclosures but instead are just left to roam around their natural habitat and reminded us of something out of Jurassic Park.
At the beginning of the tour the guide driving our trolley strongly advised everyone against using flash photography as the animals were not trained in any way and if they felt any danger would possibly attack - as you can see by the number of black pictures we fully obeyed her. It was a really good experience and we saw loads of animals but as you can see (or not in this case) we sadly don't have the pictures to prove it so just take our word that they were cool, our favourites being the two headed tiger and the six legged giraffe!!!
On Sunday we took a walk down to the Harbour and checked out some more shops (the usual window shopping as we cant afford anything, boohoo!!!) along the way. We passed right through the Singapore Opera House before getting to the harbour which was beautifully decorated for Christmas and the New Year.
Whilst we were there we did manage to catch a couple of Christmas Carol's being sung by the Opera House Juniors and also a professional Philippine Choir. In between the two FREE shows we treated ourselves and visited Max Brenner's Chocolate Shop to get a fabulous chocolate cake & fondue - YUM!!
We also took the opportunity to make some "New Year's wishes" - a great idea by the Singapore government whereby people would write down a wish on these large white beach ball that would then be placed into the water on the harbour and lit up on New Year's Eve as part of their celebrations. However Liza started getting a bit greedy/wish happy and had so many wishes that she almost filled up an entire beach ball by herself and literally had to be dragged away (at this stage I think she was doing a Bob Geldolf and asking for world peace and an end to starvation in Africa!!) to give other people a chance.
We finished up our day by going to the bar in which the original Singapore Sling cocktail was created and had a, yes you guessed it, Singapore Sling - a fabulous end to a fabulous day.
On our last day in Singapore we decided to take the advice of Trip Advisor (its 7th best thing to do in Singapore) and spend it in the airport. Normally one would think this is simply ludicrous however you have never experienced the full potential of an airport until you have been to Singapore and embarrassingly given all the money and hype it puts Heathrow T5 totally to shame.
We were in our element - there is free internet throughout the airport, you are allowed to pass freely between all the terminals, they have a cinema room, MTV stations where you can sit in a little ball chair and listen to music, sleeping lounges, massage parlours, roof top swimming pools, free PS3 & X-Box 360 console points where you can play various games and our personal favourite….. BAND HERO - yes we were jamming to Sweet Child of Mine by Guns and Roses in Singapore Airport!!
We really made the most of this travelling day in which you would normally have to just sit around waiting for a flight and meant it was a perfect end to a near perfect city. Next stop Down Under ;)
