23rd October 2009 - 25th October 2009:
Surprisingly Lucky was waiting for us when we arrived holding up a piece of paper with Sean's name on it. He kindly drove us to out hostel but refused to charge us as we were only in the tuk tuk for 5 minutes and so we asked him if he would be our driver for the following day and take us out to see Angkor Wat.
In the evening we decided to head down to 'pub street' as this looked like the best place to find restaurants on the map. We were not really sure what to expect as we travelled through the town but after going down this small side alley we emerged into a crescendo of noise and a scene that wouldn't look out of place in somewhere like Magaluf or Kavos!!
The street was full of bars and restaurants with people drinking and dancing in the street and loads of signs offering cocktail buckets and happy hour drink offers. We took a walk along the street and then opted for an Italian restaurant and grabbed ourselves a delicious pizza before heading back to the hostel to get some much needed sleep.
We met Lucky at 10am the following morning (we decided against another early morning tuk tuk ride like we had in Phnomh Penh) and he took us to see the Angkor Wat temples. The temples were spread out over '000s of square metres ????? and Lucky drove us to each one. It was amazing just how complex and intricate the architecture was and how they were able to build it on such a huge scale so many years ago - even today you would need so much machinery and vehicles to move the amount of stone and rocks needed to build the temples.
Half way through the day we stopped for some lunch and as we got out of our tuk tuk and walked towards the restaurants two young girls came charging at us in what looked like an attempt at a new 100 metre world record - basically the way they operate is that there are about 5 restaurants in a row and the person who gives you a menu is the restaurant you have to eat in.
Unfortunately for us we weren't aware of this tradition and so Sean took a menu from one girl and Liza took a menu from the other girl - bad idea - and meant we were forced to spend the next minute or so walking towards the restaurants with both girls screeching "you saw me first, I gave you menu, you come to my restaurant!!!". This was obviously not the way we had envisage starting lunch but in the end we decided that Sean's waitress had won the race by a few inches and so sat down in her restaurant, leaving Liza's waitress rather pissed off and probably muttering obscenities under her breathe at us - oops!!!
After about six hours of visiting the various temples (and also climbing up a very large one!), we were literally all templed out and headed back to the city. We were asking Lucky if he did the Angkor Wat tour everyday and he explained that it was now their low season and we were his first customer's that month (it was October 23rd) and therefore how grateful he was that his friend Ruan had introduced us to him. Lucky then decided to call Ruan and thank him again and passed the phone to Sean so that they could say goodbye one more time - a very surreal moment Sean speaking on a mobile phone to our tuk tuk driver in another city.
To be honest the two day touring schedule was very gruelling but Ruan & Lucky really made it worthwhile and enjoyable as they were so friendly and cheerful all the time and it was pleasing for us that we could at least help them out in a small way by giving them some work.
When we got back to Siem Reap we headed out to 'Pub Street' again for some food and this time decided on a Mexican restaurant where we had some of the best fajitas & nachos and of course a jug of margarita to wash it all down with - albeit we did spill most of the first batch all over the table so had to order a second jug.
We had another early start the following morning to catch our bus to Thailand where the plan was to wiz through Laos to get back to meet Catherine however she has now decided to buy a house instead of going on holiday (so inconsiderate, ha, ha!!) and so now we don't have to rush as much as we thought.
