We arrived in Swakamound on a Saturday afternoon after a long drive through the incredible sand dunes of Namibia. We got a quick introduction to all the adventure activities available and then we headed out on the town on Saturday evening for an Italian style dinner and one to many drinks.
Waking up the next morning was all a bit fuzzy however I soon sobered up when I remembered my 8.30am activity choice was sand boarding. We drove about 10 minutes out of town and were soon surrounded by nothing but sand dunes. There was 6 different sand dune runs we could all try- all varying in steepness and speed - however the hardest part was walking back up once you had made it down. 10 seconds to get down, 10 minutes to walk up. Best hangover cure found yet!! This was the epitome of how exercise could be fun. We chose the "lie down" option of the sand boards as the "stand up" version was identical to snow boarding which takes too much skill. We literally flew down the mountain of sand at speeds of 70km/hr on pieces of ply wood with not even handles to hold onto. The whole experience was so exhilarating and so much fun! Plus who wouldn't be happy with a bit of compulsory exercise burning off last night's dinner of carbs, carbs and more carbs. No hard work meant you wouldn't be able to fly down the sand dunes and try to top your speed from the previous time.
Next was quad biking, something I had done before but never on sand dunes. This was also such an awesome experience because you pretty much kept your bike on full throttle the whole time going up and down over the dunes. It was so nice to see the views from the top of the dunes as you got the best scenery of the ocean in addition to an awesome sea breeze. However I did manage to get pretty cooked in the sun while I was quad biking, mainly from the wind.
The other activity that I would have chosen but thought I should save for another country was sky diving however the 8 or so people that did do it said the experience was indescribable which convinced me to do it when the opportunity next arises.
That pretty much sums up our time in Swakamound - an awesome town in Namibia!! If I were in the area I would definitely come back.
Catch you on the flipside!
