The high speed ferry wasted no time in propelling us across the waters to Langkawi, and we were soon approaching a group of picture perfect tree clad islands rising from turquoise waters. We pulled in to a jetty at the largest of these islands, actually very large, being Langkawi itself. We craftily nipped off the boat before the hordes and made our way into the large terminal building where we were instantly greeted by a taxi driver offering us his services...

We set off from Tanah Rata in the Cameron Highlands along the same winding roads we'd taken to the tea plantation the day before. Our driver was young and drove pretty quickly, taking the sharp curves of the road so that we'd lean this way and that, and overtaking cars whether he could see if the road was clear or not. We hung on as we descended from the Highlands, through more fantastic scenery similar to that on the way up, with the driver's eclectic playl...

Once we were settled in our giant armchairs in the bus, we got underway as our rickety old coach pulled out of the station. in the centre of KL. We got out our Kindles and read as we drove through the city, soon entering the countryside outside KL. Our reading was hampered slightly by the fact the bus was critically ill and constantly shuddered even whilst moving at speed. The bus got underway from Mersing and we were soon driving through lovely tropical countryside with palm trees and waxy-leaved jungle plants all along the roadside. After our early start we both dropped off to sleep, then alternated between dozing and reading as we carried on across Malaysia. When we were awake, we enjoyed the scenery around us as we passed through hilly areas of tea plantations, flat areas of rice paddies cris-crossed with irrigation chann...

Our bus from Singapore left promptly, and in a short while had passed through the city to the northern border with Malaysia at Woodlands. We had to get off the bus here and pass through a checkpoint to officially leave Singapore before getting back on the bus and crossing a bridge into Malaysia. On the far side of the bridge we had to alight again, fill in our immigration forms in a big hall and pass through passport control, as well as getting all our bags ...
