Today, we headed down the road again to Bath, which held an exceptional surprise for us. Barry had passed through there before on a bus but was not too impressed, so our expectations were pretty low. When we got there, however, we were rewarded with a breathtaking city fashioned around the Roman Baths and heavily influenced by Roman/Palatial style. Because so many of the huge structures were designed by the same man and later his son, there was a fluidity to the city that was calming and stress freeing. Our hostel host convinced us that walking back down into the city was in our best interest, so that afternoon we walked down to the town, 20 minutes straight downhill, wandered around, decided our plan for the next day and gathered provisions from the nearest market. What we had forgotten, of course, was that 20 minutes downhill meant 30 minutes uphill. Margaret continues to lament her lack of physical activity over the past 20 years, but she's firming up nicely as this is being written. That night, supper was delicious, made more so by our huge climb. The kitchen in the hostel was interesting because there were 2 Japanese girls, a German couple, a young engineer from Pakistan, a British mom and her three boys, and the Lewis clan all cooking up meals. Very eclectic, to say the least. We all visited and it was a lot of fun seeing the varying ingredients, enjoying a great meal, and reliving some of our adventures while updating this blog.
Friday the 13th!!!!!! We can't lie. After some of the unlucky scrapes we've had, hitting Friday the 13th was not something we were looking forward to. After a quick breakfast, we decided to try our luck moving the car further down the hill to cut down on the return journey back. Just as we were moving it, we discovered we'd actually parked in front of someone's driveway! We hadn't noticed because it just looked like a fence but it was actually a gate. The owner probably could have had us towed away, but instead we apologized, he accepted, and our Friday the 13th was off to an OK start. We moved the car several blocks down the road and a man told us that we couldn't park there without a permit. However, when we asked where we should park instead, he told us to stay put and gave us a permit. Hurray for Friday the 13th!
Down in Bath, our luck held. Although it looked like we were in for rain, the clouds chose to wait until our two hour walking tour was done. The tour, again, was brilliant. Tessa enjoyed this one greatly and our guides were fun and knowledgeable. For those of you considering a trip to Europe, please keep your eyes open for the free walking tours. They really are wonderful.
