Nervous Turkey!
Well the postage stamp of a pool surrounded by tin shacks in our hostel changed the itinerary slightly today. It went from "pool day" to "stay the hell away day". This was one of the best things that could have happened as we spent the day walking round the huge lake in Kandy and indulging in treats. We came across a lot of nature such as - huge monitor lizards, tortoises, Eagles, kingfishers and tuk tuk drivers. It's amazing how we have developed the skill of quickly handling a tuk tuk offer and moving on. We chatted most of the day about home life and how we are ready to go home with a fresh view on things and get stuck in. It was a really positive chat and we have a vague outline of options and a plan for the future.
We hung around town until dinner time and we searched high and low for Trip Advisors number 1 rated restaurant in Kandy. License to Grill. The reviews were amazing and far too good to pass up on the chance of eating there. After an hour walking round in circles and been sent on a wild goose chase by a few locals a lovely women stopped us and directed us to the place. We had walked past it numerous times. We were looking for a amazing, huge restaurant with a huge BBQ out front but what we actually found was a gazebo on the high street and two rather happy chaps who told us they had sold out of food for the day. Gutted. We ended up at number 33 on Trip Advisor, with only half the food we ordered but nonetheless content. Next stop was "The Pub" a roof top terrace looking over the busy streets where our conversation turned to revisiting the "best(s)" and "worst(s)" of the year. The categories were beaches, activities, feelings, people, days, things we will miss about traveling and things we are looking forward to. Some very unexpected answers came out that surprised us both.
Just to mention one...... The best feeling/day we have had is when our bus broke down in Cambodia. We were sat on the side of a dusty road far from civilisation for 5 hours not knowing what was going on. We were supposed to be heading across the Thai border to Koh Chang but at that moment in time nothing mattered. No one knew where we were and no one expected us to be anywhere or be anything. This feeling has reocurred several times this year and is seriously the best. FREEDOM.
It has been a very reflective day.
