Ok so a long time without an update...so what have i been up to? Well firstly I spent 3 lovely days in Singapore, I think because i had such low expectations of the place to start with it could only go one way. I was very impressed with how amazingly clean and tidy everything is, even the quirky little 'burbs' of little india and little islam, which were great and so beautiful. Although it was a lovely place it did seem to lack that certain asian appeal that i have found everywhere else. For example, cars actually stop when you try and cross the road, not one person offered me a "cheeeeeeaaap suiiiit", it definately is not cheap (oh no) and finally the food definately wasn't asian, at all times i was aware of the type of meat i was eating, there was not much chilli and meals came with more than one vegitable. My body certainly was in shock.
We travelled by cable car one day to Sentosa ("cheap and crappy theme park" refence from singapore tourist board), it was rubbish everything was half built and they played rediculously loud music, yes im begining to sound old complaining about music volumes. I have realised that injuring myself on a 30meter cliff jump (check the photo it really was that big im not lying) has given me a ... new found respect for hights, aka going on this cable car nearly gave me a heart attack, but i managed it there and back so one step forward.
And now...im in Cairns, which is alright...exceptionally touristy and there are millions of backpackers here they are everywhere! So far i havent really done much just planned a few activities around auz etc. I dont think i was really prepared how expensive things would be compared to thailand, even for crappy hostels etc. I went into one hostel just to see the room the other day, which was a room of 9, which turned out to be full of guys and the smell that hit you as you walked through the door was astronomical. An odour so pungent it was probably melting the paint from the walls. We managed to find a dorm in the end called travellers oasis, that is quite nice generally but a little more expensive 5 dollers extral (2.50 in pounds) but worth it i think. That and theyve got a kitchen which is great because i can save money on food.
Today i have been massively excited, I got up early (yes early) to go on a boat trip to the barrier reef, which was amazing, whilst there we were able to snorkle in two places. The first place was great as i was doing my snorkle thing a huge white tip reef shark swam right underneith me, i nearly had to change my wet suit! It was about as long as i am tall so it was pretty big...well 5ft 10ish. We got back on the boat and everyone was talking about how they managed to see turtles and nemo fish (clown fish from the movie finding nemo), which i was gutted about. I sulked the whole time we were travelling back to the other reef. I then felt on a mission to track down a turtle, as i was just about to give up and swim closer to the reef i nearly swam into a massive turtle. It was huge, I followed it for ages, well until people from the boat shouted at me for being to far away...woth it! Shortly after I then stumbled, or swam as the case maybe, across to a little sea enenemy, which was full of a complete nemo fish family from big ones to little ones. I later learned that the biggest fish was the mum fish and when she dies the next biggest fish takes over and changes sex. strange. Shortly before we were about to depart i was swimming back to the boat and i met another turtle! This one although not as big was far more friendly and seemed equally interested staring at me as i was at him. A few other people saw me following it and joined in, as i was swimming right next to it, and may never get the chance again, i thought i want to touch it and see what a turlte feels like, although in australia probably by doing so i've broken about 12 laws (auzies are crazy). So i did! Although no one else seemed brave enough or perhaps stupid enough to touch it. It was very smooth and covered in sand. After that it gracefully disappeared into the deapths of the sea. Turtles, nemo and a shark in one day now all i need to do is see a kuala and a kangaroo and i might as well save my money and leave as there's nothing else i want from my auz experience.
I am thinking of renting a camper for a few days as it might work out cheaper than staying in a dorm, that and the weather in brisbane aparently is s***! so I'm in no hurry to get down there yet. But no more scooters!
