We were told that small areas of bush land are deliberately set alight in most areas of the Northern Territory in order to keep control of the land so that natural fires are less likely to happen and cause such devastation. You can see evidence of there low intensity from this picture whereby one side of the highway has been purposely scorched, and the other half remains normal.
