After spending a night in Sihanoukville on the coast of the mainland we headed to the boat that would take us to Lonely Beach on the island of Koh Rong just off the coast of Cambodia. The boat was of a traditional fashion complete with dodgy access plank. So after Cat went for an unexpected swim we were on our way!
The start of rainy season was just around the corner so the sea was a bit choppy and we all got a bit of sea spray to waken us up on the 3hr (actually nearer 4) crossing. Once in the bay quick change to motorboat and on to the beach and we had arrived just in-time for sunset!
Our wee hut was great and the outside bucket shower was suitably rustic!
That first night we had been told would be the best chance to see the glowing plankton as the moon was still waxing, so after tea at the restaurant we headed down to the beach to see what the visibility was like. After seeing a few glowing specs on the beach, and getting quite excited we decided to head into the still pretty rough sea and try find some more. Best decision ever! It was amazing! Agitate the water with your hands and the sea literally came alive with tiny glowing sparkles! It looked like magic, that they were trailing out of your hands as you moved! Just incredible! Very good first night!!
The next four days was a rotation of beach, sea, hammock, read, eat, sleep. The odd time clambering over rocks or walking through the jungle to a beach a couple of coves along.
The colour of the water was a constant wonder. An absolutely stunning shade of turquoise and crystal clear.
The beach was as pristine as you could get. Quite often with only us on it. Just perfect!
A second swim with plankton was definitely happening, but this time it was like being in a swimming pool. So calm and still it was lovely! A cloud helped with the contrast a bit and we again saw the tiny glittery effect of the plankton. Would do that everybody if I could. Something that would never get boring!
A bonfire on the last night was a lovely way to round it off! I'm just so glad we got to experience it before the island gets over developed and the natural beauty is ruined.
