We woke up in our 'cave' as the bus pulled into Arches National Park. We made a quick breakfast at the side of the road and experienced our first 'pit' toilet (first of many) - nice! After breakfast we drove on to the entrance to the Arches trail which we were doing that morning. This was another amazing place and we saw some amazing arches. It was nice to walk so early in the morning before it got too hot and before too many people were about.
We saw a lot of the arches together and took lots of photos but then we got to a part of the trail which was 'primitave'. Basically, one of the arches collapsed about 10 years ago and the trail used to go underneath that arch. So another trail was created by the public but it involves scrambling up some rocks! I took one look at it and decided I would wait where we were with a few others. Meanwhile Dave went ahead with the brave ones! It was quite hard work but worth it for them because of the spectacular views from the top. They stopped at another arch on the way back which you could walk right into to see the tree growing in the middle.
After Arches we drove to a town called Moab which felt strange after being in the wilderness for 2 days. We visited the payphones to call home, and the internet cafe. We went to a local pub for lunch and got a burger and a beer for $8 (!), then to the supermarket for some beer for later.
We headed to our campground which was right next to the Colarado River - a really beautiful spot, shame about the mosquitos!! We spent the evening eating and drinking by the campfire before getting into our sleeping bags outside and stargazing - a completely clear sky and lots of shooting stars!
