Kuala Lumpur
So we’ve done quite a bit since the last entry! Where to start? We left Singapore last Tuesday and got a bus for Melaka on the west coast of Malaysia. It actually turned out to be quite a nice bus which made the 5 hour journey more pleasant and only cost us around £10 each. We arrived in Melaka mid afternoon and got a taxi to a guesthouse. However after a quick look in we decided to find somewhere else as it was a bit dark and dingy. Anyway we found somewhere slightly better just around the corner, so checked in and had a walk around the town visiting some church ruins and a few other historical buildings. That evening we wandered through Chinatown and found somewhere to eat.
After food we went back to the hostel for a very hot and humid night’s sleep, we have since decided that in this climate air-con is an essential! From Melaka we jumped on a coach to Kuala Lumpur which took a couple of hours. On arrival we booked in at a hostel we had reserved and set about exploring the city. After a good look around yet another Chinatown we got a tube to the Petronas Twin Towers which were very shiny! In the evening we visited the historic Central Market where Stani had his feet nibbled and sucked by some fish, which he quite enjoyed (as did the fish!).
The next morning we moved accommodation and booked our flights for Borneo. We didn’t do much else except for the late afternoon when we made it out of the city to the Batu Caves, a huge collection of limestone caves that have been transformed into Hindu temples. To reach them we scaled 272 steps which in the humidity was a sweaty affair! Once at the top we entered to find that they have been filled with various psychedelic statues and small temples. The main attraction however was a massive gold effigy of Muraga that guards the entrance. The next morning we grabbed some breakfast before checking out and making our way to the airport for our flight to Borneo.
