Well then ive just stopped over in Accra to get to immigration to upgrade my visa so i can go to Burkino Faso so thought i'd take advantage of the civilised intrent cafes in this city. man im in the 'white' part of acrra and it is so different. theres atm machines left right and centre and im gonna pop to the supermarket alter and buy some actaul cheese!! well not real cheese, its processed but hey its cheese! had the most amazing time ever the past few days.
i travelled down from Vakpo and got talking to a guy who was buliding a school there, he was really nice and paid my 4 hour trotro fair..that keeps happening to me..people are so nice. met cassie in the 'white' area and had my first cheeseburger in what felt like years. was totally amazing! stayed at cassies place and then heading into Accra on friday morning. i found out a space opened on my south america tour so mom can join me in Rio to BA so was soooo pleased about that. then we spent the rest of the day trying to find tickets for the John Legend concert. we walked around for about 3 hours asking EVERYONE. we got directed to the National Theatre and walked in on an uber fancy computer convention...imagine two skanly backpackers wandering round this convention "hello would you like to buy a mac?". umm i dont think so! so i found Edem and he told us to go the tv station who was sponsering it. we got to this Tv studio and no one knew what the hell we were on about! was so annoying so we justed heading to Kokrabite beach which i heard was just a backpacker hangout, so wasnt expecting much. we got there and the place was full of rastafarians getting high!! there were palm trees everywhere, a bar playing amazing reggae, all these tue dye clothes for sale hanging in the trees and i just thought i am in heaven!! we got taken to the reception and had a pep talk about safety by the owner who felt like our dad by the end of it, after ordering our food i then heading to the bar of course and at the bar you instantly make about 20 new friends. then anna, mindy and isabelle (the volunteers i met at Cape Coast) came allong and then i saw 2 girls we met at Wli falls last weekend, so its like all the white people of Ghana keep bumping into each other. its so fun.
after a few hours meeting loads of people, mainly hang round with 2 german volunteers who had been here for 3 months, dinner was ready so they sit every at tables and bring the food out all together, felt like being at colehayes!! was such a funny thing to do. and then spent the rest of the night at the bar, watching african dancing for 2 hours then i plugged in my iPod to the soundsystem and churned out the reggae, talked to the rastas who named me Empress Kate. haha. After breakfast, we got a tro into accra to get to the 'concert' which started at 1. we arrived and NOTHING was happening, they hadnt even set the stage up and nobody was there. althiough i did see this guy called Yeshawa who was selling his cds outside the square and i was like hey i know that guy... turns out hes from Peckham and ive seen him at nearly every hiphop gig ive been to in london cas hes been there selling his cds. so had a long convo about concerts and that and coudlnt believe he was in Ghana. after that me, cassie and anna got lunch came back at 4 and they were still putted up the 20ft high "U" in the "SOULS OF AFRICA" sign! it was crazy.so decided we couldnt wait around for hours so went back to the beach, we started walking down the main road and some guy pulled over and gave us a lift all the way to big millies which was cool. then started the reggae party for sat night. had dinner with everyone in the restaurant and then the live reggae band came on. they were so good. i danced for hours and hours and hours! you can imagine. met so many people who came on sat, talked to a guy who had worked at Ritz backpackers...which is were im going in South Africa and he worked at Jolly Boys..which is were im staying in Zambia! was such a coincidence. spent time chatting to this half german half ghanaian guy who just came back from uni in london two weeks a go and also this girl who did a geography degree and now works over here for the UN. was such a nice place to spend the weekend, was about 1/3 local people, ghanians and the rastas, 1/3 volunteers and 1/3 rich young ghanians who come from accra at the weekends to party. the atmosphere was so fun. mainly cas it was were all the locals hing out too and there wernt just tourist there. that night me and cassie slept on a matress on the floor of what they call "the loft"....basically a rasied platform above the beach with a roof over it, was so nice to wake up to the sound of the ocean, cassie turned over and said "kate you were so drunk you were dancing like a mad man!", she even got a video of it and it wasnt that crazy!! for the whole morning everywhere i went on the beach some rasta would say "i really felt your dancing last night, i could feel it" then theyd walk off somewhere with a huge joint.
we hung out on the beach alll day on sunday, talking to anyone who was still there and saying goodbye to people that were leaving and i went on a crazy spending spree of clothes, they had the coolest dresses and bags the rastas were making, me and cassie found some shells on the beach and gave it to one of the rastas and he made us a pair of earings each out of the shells. and i found this really cool dress i got for 3cedis that was made out of a sack of flour!haha i had lunch with a table of rich ghanain guys who were so nice and really interesting, they ended up giving us a lift into Accra, then i spent the night at Cassies.
