Our flight to Bali was hilarious. We were sat with a Balinese lady who clearly didnt understand any english at all. We got that bored we found ourselves being rather immature and asking her silly questions to see her response, it was very amusing. You can all imagine what questions we were asking!!!
Once we arrived in Bali we had to queue to get our visas then had another long queue to get our passports stamped. Oh the joys of standing in a queue for a few hours with no air con. Once we finally made it through we headed to hotel reservations, bartered with the staff and headed to our hotel in a taxi.
Our first impressions of Bali were quite run down and I thought it resembled Thailand. As we got closer to Kuta we could see lots of bright lights and hear the music blaring from the bars. The next thing the taxi stopped and we were at our hotel. Perfectly located across from a few of the 24 HOUR bars/clubs, OH THE JOYS lol. We got to our room and freshened up. The noise didnt seem to be too much of an issue!! We had food at a nice, trendy bar and met an English guy who worked and lived there. He talked aboutt he Bali bombs and told us we were literally 50metres from where it happened and told us some nice places to go. We were tired after travelling so an earlyish night was needed so we got back to the hotel and ready for bed. BUT sleep wasnt on the cards. The music was mad and I totally struggled to sleep. So an hour later Danni was a wee star and took up my moto if you cant beat them join them. We put on some clothes and headed out for a few drinks and food. We watched a bit of the Spain Germany game and took ful advantage of the music going off second half to finally get to sleep.
Lack of sleep didnt stop us diving out of bed the following day to hit the pol. The sun was out and we were in need of a suntan. We managed to change rooms too so all was good. While at the pool we met a guy called Tom from London who seemed nice and was on his own as the girlhe was with was on the beach. We let him tag along and headed to check out the beach.
Kuta is very commercialised and busy. We were surprised that the beach wasnt too bad although you had no chance to relaxing if thats what you went for. We had a laugh mixing with the locals who were constantly trying to sell you something whether ice cream, a sarong or a wooden carving!! We had our feet scrubbed and our toe nails painted and also bought some bangles. We clearly had vulnerable brits about our heads!!
The sun goes down mega early so we just sat and chilled and watch the sun set. The beach started to get really busy and it was a fab atmosphere. We headed back to the hotel about 6.30 to get ready for our first night out. We had planned to meet some others at 9 so had a few hours to chill and get ready. We met Tom and his friend Liz who was fab and headed for food, it was boiling. By the time we had stepped out the room we were sweating buckets (very attractive image eh?). We had a gorgeous meal then hit a few bars. We even treated ourselves to V.I.P in one of the bars, danced away and tried some Pole dancing (tried being the word). They played funky houseand was dead trendy. Think we were offered drugs about 20 times walking along the main strip of Kuta!! They do anything here to earn some money to survive!
We had booked a tour guide for the following day so I was sensible and headed home around 1.15 while party animal Dannielle and the others stayed out and had a brill night. We both struggled today for our tour but had a great day seeing different parts of the island.
Our guide Nyoman (who turned out to be a total happy chappy, NOT!, picked us up at 10 and had the joy of knowing her had 10 hours to spend with us lol. I think he was sick of us after 10 minutes with all the questions we had! We headed through the capital Denpadar which was busy noisy onto Seminyak where we had requested to see as it was said to be a more upmarkt, trendy place. Seemingly Kate Moss has a place there. We had a wee drive around, got a feel for the place and Nyoman gave us a chance to have a look at the beach, which was pretty disappointing.
From there we headed north to see some of the famous rice fields on the way we passed lots of lovely quaint little villages each famous for specific things. Batabulan for its stone carving, the carvings which filled the shops were amazing. We also visited a Balinese family hich was a fab experience. We met the eldest member of the family (who we had our picture taken with) and had a look around. It makes you realise how lucky we are. Again more hassle by locals selling things and the family requested a donation which we gave since it was such a great experience to witness their home.
We arrived at te Tegallang rice fields which were amazing to look at. We took some pics and got more hassle from locals trying to sell us things and have a look in their shops. We then drove 40 minutes north to a famous volcano in Bali called Kintamani. We had dinner in a Balinese restaurant overlooking the volcano, there were some fantastic views.
The next stop was to an Agrow Tourism centre where they had various plantations. They grew coffee and tea and we had the chance to sample some of the things they made there. We leanrt about the weasle and how its poo was used to make coffee!! Lovely! We witnesses the various stages in the process of its production. There was lots of different plants and trees including vanilla, chilli and cinnamon. The aroma of smells was lovely.
We had heard the resort of Ubud was nice so we requested we drive there so off Nyoman went. Although scared at the thought of being bitten (after their being a break out of rabies and speaking to people who had been bitten) we spent a little time taking pictures of the monkeys at the Mokey Forest and Nyoman allowed us some free time to have a little wander around to get a feel for the place. On the way back we stopped off in Celuk which was famous for its gold and silver smiths and had a look at the jewellery.
By then it was getting dark and seeing as we had checked out of our hotel in Kuta we had to head somewhere to find a place to stay. Nyoman recommended Sanur. We struggled at first to get anywhere to stay with it being busy season but finally spotted a little guest house where we managed to get a room for the night. It was a much more chilled out, quieter place.
We spent three nights there. They only had one night free in an air conditioned room so our second and third nights were spent in a fan room with no hot water. Proper traveller style lol.
Breakfast here was yum, so much nicer than anywhere else we had stayed so far. After breakfast on our first day we headed to the beach. As I arrived at the beach I was met by an over friendly Balinese lady called Melanie who seemed very interested in me and what I planned for the day etc. She advised me that the sunbeds are certain parts of the beach you couldnt use and was leading me to the free sunbeds!! Only I eventually found out all she was trying to do was have more time with me to persuade me to have a massage. I managed to settle in front of a nice bar and had a few hours chilling time before Danni came down. Once the sun went down we went for a walk along the beach front where lots of the locals were selling Balinese food and generally hanging out. We then wandered along the main road back to the hotel and one back at the hotel we chilled before getting ready to head out and I had a wee swim in the hotel pool.
We ate in the same bar we had spent the day beside at the beach as they had a Reggae night advertised. We sat there for a while before heading home. Our first night in our fan room was rather restless but we survived and saved lots of money in the meantime lol.
Day two on the beach was mad. It was gorgeous and the sun was shining then suddenly a total downpour came and it was like a military operation getting all the cushions in and sheltering all the shacks. We sat in the bar for around 20 minutes before the sun came out again. Not even 15 minutes later we were sat in the bar again away from the rain! Once that stopped we had another few hours at the beach then headed home to get a quick wash before heading to the Balinese night market where they sold different Balinese foods in front of you. We tried a few different things and to our surprise actually enjoyd them. It was also a bonus that they were the cheapest things we had eaten since we had arrived! We kept our fingers crossed that the bellies would be ok though. The market had a great atmosphere and it was nice mixing with the locals.
We had a walk to the other end of the resort and to our surprise seen the lovely yellow M in the distance. As much as we had started to hate it while in Malaysia we had just been saying how much we fancied a McFlurry!! To our disappointment there was none so a sundae and a look at the most gorgeous guy we had both seen in our lives had to do (his girlfriend was equally gorgeous!) This McDonalds was mad they sold chicken on the bone and also had little portions of rice, a bit different from back home and that wed ever seen anywhere else. Back to the hotel we headed and I had another swim before chilling then bed for an early start as we had booked a trip to Turtle Island.
Our driver Tomi arrived and we headed south to Nusa Dua, which is famous for its 5 star hotels where honeymooners go. It was about a 40 minute drive. We had booked Turtle Island with some snorkelling a the glass bottom boat. he weather wasnt great so we kept our fingers crossed the sun would come out before getting on the boat!
Tomi was fab he taught us so much about Balinese life. As we arrived into Nusa Dua we witnessed lots of Balinese cremations and Tomi explained the procedure etc which was totally fascinating. Seemingly those who cant afford to have their family cremated when they die have them buried and 5 years later their bones are dug up and burnt! There was around a hundred taking place that day.
We got kitted out with our snorkelling gear and given some bread to attract the fish and were taken on the glass bottom boat to the snorkelling point. After some hesitation we got into the water and I was loving it. We had under water cameras and took some photos of the fish and coral.
Once we had finished there and dried off we were on our way to Turtle Island where we got to have our photos taken with the turtles. There was also Snakes, Toucans, Bats, an eagle which we had our pics taken with as well as some other animals.
We wanted to see more of Nusa Dua so paid Tomi some money to allow us to stay there for a few hours. We hit the beach which was far more chilled and nicer than any others in Bali. We had actually entered a hotel beach and were eventually chased away by the security guard ooops! Our time in Nusa Dua was cut short however as Tomi had received some bad news, his Uncle had died so we headed back to Kuta where we started to find some accommodation for our last 2 nights in Bali.
This proved to be harder than we had thought. The resort was so busy with it being Indonesian and Australian holiday time. We walked the streets for ages trying to find somewhere within our price range. By chance we bumped into 2 English ladies who had been here lots so advised us to go see a guy who would help us. About an hour of walking in the roasting heat later we found Johnny! He was a lovely man and made sure he fund us somewhere. It just so happened to be the cheapest place we had found so far and although another fan room with no hot water we were noe becoming hardened travellers haha. He took us from his shop back and forth on his motorbike with our bags we got checked in and headed straight to the beach and had a well deserved dip in the sea.
Once the sun had gone down we wandered back to the hotel and got ready to go out. We were totally craving something nice to eat and finally we settled at a nice restaurant. We had a few drinks and witnessed ever more hot Ozzies (where were they when I spent 6 months in Australia?) before going back to the hotel and chilling on the balcony. We met our neighbours, 2 lovely Dutch guys so sat and spoke to them for a while before heading to bed.
Today is our last day in Bali so another day at the beach trying to catch some sun then heading to a nice bar later to watch the sunset before having an early night before our 6am flight back to Kuala Lumpur then onto Penang.
Our last day in Bali was one to remember. We spent most of the day at the beach catching some sun when it wasnt behind the clouds. We headed back to the hotel early to get changed as had planned to go to Ku de ta to watch the sunset. A few people had recommended it so we thought we couldnt miss out. When we got back to the hotel all excited and looking forward to getting ready and heading out we were dvised by reception that there were no towels and after talking some more finally one suddenly was clean and available for us to SHARE!!! Bless Dan I was the one in the shower first!! Anyway just part of the whole accommodation for a few pound situation lol.
We arranged for a driver to pick us up and were on our way. It had a massive entrance and the guards even checked inside the car for bombs etc!! As we approached the entrance you could see the sun coming down and the beach and hear funky house music blaring. It was defo the place for the beautiful people. Mega trendy and funky. I was in my element. The prospect of a glass of vino was also exciting so we heade to the bar and ordered 2 glasses, at 12 pound a glass I was savouring every minute. We managed to get a good seat and sat enjoying the vino and good music as the sunset.
Later on we chatted to two Australian girls who were lovely, shared some of my stpries from my time in Oz and ensured they had my details if there employer was offering any sponsorships there lol. We had arranged for our driver to pick us up in a few hours so were gutted when we had to cut our chin wag short and head back to Kuta.
The resort where the bar was was so nice, dead trendy and much more less tacky and upmarket. We wished we had spent more time there as we drove through the streets on our way home. The journery may I add which had us holding on to our seats. To say they are mad drivers in Bali is an understatement. It was an adventure to say the least.
When we got back we treated ourselves to a gorgeous dinner. I had Fajitas and Danni had lovely Pasta. We then did some last minute shopping before heading to the hotel for an earlyish night for our 4am start the following day for our flight to Penang at 6.
A few quotes which will always remind us of Bali. "You want massage?", "You want transport?" "Ice cream, ice cream". We must have heard each about a thousand times per day!!
Back to Malaysia we go.
