Kennington to Cape Town
DAY 65 - 71
CAIRO
We spent a week in Cairo - getting our Sudanese visa, doing a bit of sightseeing and sorting out the car. Getting our Sudanese visa was, in the end, very simple. Having waited over two months in London, still with no luck, we managed to get them in Cairo in a couple of hours having sorted out a letter of introduction from the British Embassy (which we bought in Cairo for £20) and $100 each.
As well as seeing the Pyramids, Islamic Cairo, Eqyptian Museum and souks, we went early one Friday morning to the Birquash Camel Market. Thousands of camels are brought here up the 40 day road from Sudan and sold - many for meat since they do not look in very good shape when they arrive. It was an extraordinary experience being in the middle of the market where Sudanese sellers and rich Egyptian buyers were haggling over the wretched beasts. It was not a very nice sight seeing the camel herders beating the camels who were all hobbled but still managed to run pretty fast.
At one stage Rich was bargaining with a seller of seven camels - not for money, but for me!! I'd like to think I'm worth at least 8...
We were joined at the Motel Salma campsite by a few other overlanders: Sofie and Eric a Belgian couple in a red Land Rover heading south and a lovely Dutch couple, Jasper and Monique travelling for a couple of years in their converted orange IFA truck. Jasper used to fit the interior of yachts and the inside of their truck looks just like a very comfortable yacht complete with shower, loo and kitchen. We also met up with a Swiss couple and a Brit, Mac, doing our trip in reverse - so it was great to get some tips on routes further south.
