SO we decided that we should move on to Cambodia as we were just getting too comfortable in Thailand, we managed to get a mini bus for 650 Baht each, after some shopping around as one place told us 1500 Baht. We thought it was a great deal! We get up at 6.15 am and wait outside in the poring rain for the bus that was 45 mins late……5 1/.2 hours later the bus driver stops at a "restaurant" 5 km before the border for a break…..that's when it all started!!! There are 5 other tourists with us so we all decided to sit at a table together and hopefully get a bite to eat, but a very rude Cambodian woman comes to our table and tells us we cant sit together and that we must buy our Cambodian Visa from her as we cant get one on the border, she wanted $35 from us, we all heard we could get it on the border for $20, so I told the woman she was lying and the rest of the group joined in!! Well she did not want to take no for an answer, she was saying we going to get left behind as the bus would not wait for us…..anyway so we stood our ground and told her no!!! so after a while we jump in the bus and head to the border, by then we thought we had got rid of the pesky scam artists (who we all read about in the lonely planet), the bus driver does not take us directly to the border but stops just outside and points to a little shack on the side of the road and tells us to get our visa…..Ha-ha and who is standing there but the rude Cambodian woman!! Again we all have a bit of a shout and argument and start heading towards the big building in front that clearly is the border! We still get harassed on the way but hold our ground and manage to get into the Thailand border to then enter Cambodia! Finally! You would think right……..so we then have to go through quarantine and they stick a really dirty ear thermometer in our ears and send us to the visa counter, the sign clearly states $20, we are right in front of the counter with the necessary paperwork and passport photos waiting for our visa and a guy in official clothing says we must pay him more, and we pointed at the $20 sign, eventually he said we have to pay $25 and we were so fed up that we just agreed and went through to another line to get our entry stamp!! Finally, so with big smiles on our faces we went to our second bus to get to Siem Reap which is 100 miles away. We were told that it will take 4 ½ hours to get to Siem Reap! Joy!!!!!!!!
Anyway so we finally got to Siem Reap and found a really cute hotel! Today we just went for a walk around the town, its really small but it is so lovely, the people are very humble and not so annoying as the Thai's can be. Cambodia has allot of American influence and they also trade in USD. The food is actually allot more expensive than Thailand.
We went for a walk and found a rehabilitation centre for people who have lost limbs from landmines! We sore a few children outside without limbs and gave them a little wave…..it was very nice to see that there are such organisations like this…..I am hoping to go back and have a proper visit. Tomorrow we are going to see Angkor Wat, which I am very excited about….
Oh my god..... after dinner i decided to go for the hour long body massage, i have been for one in Thailand before and it was great, they rub loads of oil on you and give you a fab massage so this is what i was expecting in Cambodia!! So anyway i go into the little room and the woman tells me to get undressed, i am standing in my knickers when she says i must put these fisherman trousers on and a long baggy top, i just thought hmmm that is a wierd way of doing it maybe in Cambodia they put the oil on under the clothes.....so i lie back and she starts twisting my feet in ways that they are not meant to be twisted....so again i was like hmm ok she must just be getting ready to do it hahahah well then she jumps onto the bed and starts ramming her albow and knees into my legs and i am screaming inside, and she starts massaging my thighs and i am lying with my eyes closed and i just cant help but laugh!! was so wierd, but then it got sore and this went on for each leg and each arm, i was just praying she was nearly finished, she then says turn around so my face is in the hole and i think ok my back should be really good.....Well no it was worse i was in so much pain, she was digging her albows in and then standing on my back and bum.......then to top it off she gets me to sit up and she twists my body around so my back clicks in about five different places!!! the only nice part of it was when she massaged my head.....thank god it was only $5, i walked up to my room with a very sore body and will think twise before i climb onto a massage table again hahaha!!!!!!
So will update u again…….
The Angkor temples are amazing……we got a tuk tuk for $15, he drove us around for the day, thank god we did cause the temples are really far from each other and walking in the heat like that is no joke. It was fairly expensive as you could get a day ticket for $20 or a three day for $40 but we were told that you can't really do it in one day so we got the three day, and on top of that you have to get a tuk tuk too, (or get a bicycle which would be a joke) for the two days it cost us $110 (USD)…………Anyway it is worth it because it is just amazing, granted the walking around can be really hard as you sweat buckets and get really dusty but the history of it and the size of them are really worth it all! because they are about 600-1000 years old and were hidden in the forest for so long most of the temples have trees that have grown over them, and that is so cool to see this huge arse tree taking over a temple, that's what you call nature taking back what is theirs! All of them are made of stone and the carvings are really intricate. The one thing that really gets annoying, are the kids selling stuff and the disabled begging, after the first few temples, it just gets irritating, as we do want to give them all something but they are so relentless that they follow you everywhere until your brains explode. Also in the civil war they bombed most the temples so there is allot of sadness when you walk around and most of the statues are missing heads and so on……We were just not expecting the size of them and how far spaced they are, it is a massive area, and to think that they were built and then hidden in the forest for so long.
Last night we gave in to a guy who had no legs due to the land mines, he was selling books so I went and bought an over priced book from him and then five minutes later while we sitting and eating a whole lot more came around, its so hard to turn a blind eye, my heart gets so sore because there are still millions of landmines all over Cambodia that are destroying lives. Its very sad to see. Also we were really unsure about doing the second day at the temples so we told our tuk tuk guy we would think about it, on our way to dinner another guy stops us and offers to take us for a little cheaper…..again we say we will think about and off we go to dinner…this guy was a little annoying and his English was not so good…..anyway so we have dinner and start walking back to our hotel and the tuk tuk guy stops and asks if we have decided….well Darren was like no just tell him we're not going…..shame he was so disappointed as he now wont have work and he still shook Darrens hand and said to have a good evening….we walk away and we both start feeling like s*** as we were planning on going anyway, I could not take it anymore, I said 'come lets go look for him', so off we went 'the idiot brigade' looking for a tuk tuk guy late at night with a million tuk tuk drivers zooming all around us! So we walk and look and start feeling even worse and we both saying shame he is probably going back to his family of 15 with no work tomorrow, and we are so emotional after seeing all these kids and disabled people begging that we almost start crying. After our second go around the town and saying if we don't see him then we must go back….who do we see at the end of the road but HIM, just sitting there all alone in his tuk tuk, we go up to him and say 'you have work tomorrow?', and he knows we went looking for him and he is so happy that he gives us a free lift to our hotel…..and we were able to sleep better that night hahahahaha, we are such d*** as we always seem to put ourselves in situations like this and end up getting all upset! We are moving on to Phnom penh tomorrow as there is nothing left for us in Siem Reap….another day of travelling on a blasted bus for six (or so they say) hours, as normally they take twice as long. So it could be an interesting day.
