We left Olu Deniz to head to our last stop, Cirali, just south of Antalya. We detoured initially via Tlos - an ancient Lycian site though like most places the Romans and the Ottamans had had a go at rebuilding it. It is a large, impressive site on the top of a hill. There were Lycian tombs, Roman theatres and walls built by the Ottamans from Roman columns.
We then moved on to the Saklikent gorge - the 2nd largest in Europe. A very popular site - you initially walk through the gorge on a board walk for 500m then into an area where three streams meet. Here you have to wade across the water to get further into the gorge. This proved difficult as the current is strong - those with just flip flops on were losing their shoes. We managed this and then moved up stream. The gorge is sheer on both sides and about 20ft wide with sheer sides going up 100s of feet. We managed to get most of the navigable way up (the gorge goes on for 18km but there have been rock falls that block the way). All in all enjoyable and impressive although it was close to not meeting Turkish health & safety standards let alone UK ones. There seemed to be no supervision, only warnings to take a guide and wear a helmet - which everyone ignored. It was starting to rain and if that had become persistent, the canyon would quickly fill up making it lethal.
We drove on to Cirali - about 150km. The coast didn't look quite as spectacular as it was now raining - the first rain we have seen in 4 weeks.
The next day it was back to normal - blue skies and sunshine. We decided to walk to see the eternal flames at Chimeria and then on to a part of the Lycian way. We walked up the mountain to find the flames - packets of methane gas that come out of the ground and burn continuously (since pre historic times even mentioned in Homer's Iliad). After this we pressed on up the mountain - a tough climb but very pretty into the next valley with little waterfalls and rock pools. Eventually we came to a village and decided to stop here for a drink. We found a café that turned out to be on a trout farm - it served delicious trout with chips and starters all for £5. We were all too hot to eat - except Ken who tucked in (well, we did help him a bit). We decided to come back here for dinner.
Next day Ken & Judi decided to do a long walk - we weren't up for this. They walked a section of the Lycian Way which was about 20km long with some steep climbs - my knees not up to that. We opted for a gentle 2 hr. walk to the next set of coves - lovely plus a swim on the beach. After this it was time to pick up Ken & Judi who had found a nice restaurant on the river.
Last couple of days have been lazy ones - spent the first looking round Olympus. Olympus is another Lycian city but it is just ruins - looks like something from an Indiana Jones movie with undergrowth all over them. After a brief look it was then onto the beach until we discovered the cake shop! Our last day was spent doing very little for me as Fran had succumbed to the dreaded sickness bug. Ken and Judi went off to do another 20km walk round the lighthouses - I played chauffeur and nurse.
