Mike C-NJ Always happy to help! I have to share a bit about fueling as I hiked to the top of Mt. Whitney on Sunday. I was able to eat a bnaana, half of a begel and a cup of tea before the hike. I felt this was perfect since it's what I usually eat before a race of 10k or longer. I must have hiked for six steep miles before I decided I had better refuel. I sipped on diluted gatorade along the way. I then decided to force myself to eat some salty cheese and crackers as I was hiking. I washed it down with gatorade and kept on moving forward. I was not hungry, but I knew I needed to keep my energy flowing. After a few more miles I ate some trail mix and sipped on gatorade. This kept my energy levels perfect all the way to the top. I never stopped once. I just picked out food from my fanny pack as I moved along the trail. Remember this was a race to see who cloud reach the top first! Yes, I beat Dan, by 6 minutes! OH YEAH! Anyway the bottom line is, staying fueled and hydrated is the key.On another note, I have been rereading Brain Training for Runners and I have come upon on of my favorite chapters. It's chapter 8, Mastering the Experience. It talks a lot about training your brain to withstand the pain and discomfort we encounter while running hard. It is really a great wealth of information for the mental aspect of training. If you get the chance to read it I believe you will benefit from it.I hope everyone has resorted to using more foot power and saving fuel! Enjoy your runs.
