From Vang Vieng I took a Mammouth bus journey down to the bottom of the country to the 4000 islands, which took a day and a night! The sleeper bus was cool, with proper bunk beds but they were doubles so I had to sleep next to a stranger - she was nice tho! After about 3 different buses and a boat I arrived on Don Det island and trudged around with a woman I met on the boat until we found some nice bungalows to stay in.
We were on the quiet side of the island so not much do do except sit around doing nothing - which neither of us were very good at! The decription in the guidbooks made it sound like an island paradise where you could swim, but the river was very muddy at this time of year so I wouldn't want to swim in it. After a bit of a rest I set off to try and book some kind of tour for tomorrow. Not much luck but on the way back as it was getting dark I came across King Kong restaurant claiming to have the best food on the island, which turned out to be true! I sat and chatted to the owner, who was a scouser, and found out they ran kayaking tours too so I booked us both onto it for tomorrow.
The next day on the tour we did a lot of kayaking and visited a couple of huge waterfalls. We kayaked to the Cambodian border to see the rare dolphins there and were not disappointed! Arrived back to the bungalows to a lovely sunset! Had dinner at King Kong again with our group.
The next day I left on a boat and a bus back to Pakse as was running out of time.
