Ah, the Taj Mahal... The most extravagant monument ever built in the name of love. We managed to bag a cheapie hotel bang next to the East Gate thinking that we would be straight in after breakfast. What we didn't realise was that they've recently decided to move the ticket office 1km up the road away from the gate. However, we still made it in early enough before the bus loads of umbrella-holding groups arrived. It really is beautiful and doesn't look real against the backdrop of a blue sky. We did as everyone does - took our 'Princess Diana' shot from the bench and captured various shots reflecting in the (almost empty) water channels. Looks exactly the same as the footage I've seen of my (Katy's) mum there aged 7 when my grandparents lived out in India in the 1950s. My memory of it has been made all the more special since learning that my beautiful Grannie passed away on Saturday.
Onto Fatehpur Sikri - the Mughal Empire's capital for all of about 15 years in the 16th century before they realised that there was a slight lack of water in the area (with it being perched at the top of a hill and all). It now survives as a ghost town, Pompeii-stylee. Had a full on sweaty-betty taxi ride on the way there. The air con would have cost us an extra pound but every penny saved counts! Very glamorous this travelling malarky.
