I must admit this is something of a cheat as our long weekend in Bilbao was at the end of March, but with all the sightseeing, bars and pintxos (basque tapas) I didn't get around to updating the blog, which seems a bit of a shame as Bilbao is a brilliant city to visit. It apparently rains 45% of the year, but we were treated to warm blue sunny skies and not a drop of rain fell. There is so much more to the city than just the Guggenheim museum such as good food and drink (those who know us will know that our travels are really just one long meal) at very low prices. We were with a group from our spanish class so this was of course a cultural visit, it just so happens that food and drink are an important part of Basque culture.
We spent a day in San Sebastian which feels like it is really a seaside resort on the Med which somehow got misplaced and the pintxos there are works of art. A smaller resort on the coast, Getaria has a museum dedicated to Balenciaga, one if its sons. Having said all that it is worth a weekend in Bilbao (easy by EasyJet, short bus ride to city for just over a euro) just for the Guggenheim, which looks like the sort of time travel machine that Dr Who would really like if he got to upgrade the police box. It is far more beautiful than any picture can convey inside and out.
For those who have complained that they don't seem to get the email alerts from the blogsite our next stop is Jordan on May 4th and you can check the website or Facebook for entries if you feel so inclined.
