Hortenus opened the first German high school (then middle school and kindergarten & library). Also brought Lutheran beliefs to the locality. (Previously Catholic because the area was run by the Austro-Hungarian empire. The invited the Germans in to secure and run the area - and they came at the promise of no taxes. All to keep the Ottoman hordes from the south (Wallachia) at bay.
