The original wooden sculpture was made in 1683. Chris sits on the shore of the river now. The legend is he was a tall, strong man (a giant?) who ferried people across the river Daugava on his shoulders. One night he took a baby - he was utterly exhausted, but soldiered on regardless. The next morning when he woke in his cabin, the baby was gone and there was a chest of gold coins there - and that was used to found the city of Riga. Magic gold. Gotta love it.
