All packed up, we embarked upon our journey south to Windy Wellington, or Welly as it's known to locals.
Having harped on about it we stopped at a McDs to try a Kiwi Legend. Mmm... A meat pie with cheese in it. Not content with its calorific value, we added fries and drinks. The fries were useful to soak up the excess pie juice, which was OK. At least it shut me up!
We returned our car to the car hire place and got a free ride to the CQ Comfort Hotel on Cuba Street. We only had the remainder of the day to see Welly, so after a regenerative snooze we set out to explore.
We walked down Cuba street, passed all it's interesting little shops, stopped in a second hand book shop and a bead shop. We strolled through the CBD (central business district) taking in some interesting sculptures down by the waterfront. We were on the hunt for somewhere to eat in the evening but the waterfront didn't quite hit the spot. Gary treated me to a hazelnut flavoured ice cream based frappuccino, which we had in the sun.
I engineered a walk over a foot bridge in Franz Kitts park on the waterfront, past the love locks. Conveniently, Gary asked me what the rusty old things were. I was delighted to tell him that people engrave their names onto a padlock, place it on the bridge and throw the key into the water as a sign of their love for one another. Before he had a chance to make any dumb comments I got out the lock which I had engraved back in the UK. Gaz was very surprised, but took it all very well and ended up repositioning it so it was more obvious! For those of you concerned with continuity, you will realise that we didn't throw the key into the water. Instead, we kept one each... Just incase ;)
Still a bit dazed, we headed to the cable car, which took us up the hill to good views over the city. Gary is still not convinced it is a cable car, but this little red cable car which has been in service since the early 1900's entertained us both. We were a bit too late for the observatory, so settled for a stroll back down the hills through Wellington Botanical Gardens. Back through town as the sun started to fall to the hotel.
We had a drink (and a free one for Gaz) at BRU on Cuba street, followed by frozen margaritas in The Flying Burrito Brothers, where we ate. I've never been to a place where there was a choice of 5 hot sauces on the table, alongside salt and pepper, for normal people like me! We predicted what order of heat they had judging only by the labels, then Gary tested them to see. I had to trust him as you will never find me trying a sauce called Irazu- volcanic pepper sauce! The food was good but a little rushed as they were quiet and wanted us to finish so they could go home!
