We had a very lazy start to the day. Gary scanned the TV stations and having tired of the many infomercials that NZ telly has to offer he settled for Gone with the Wind. Well, it is New Years day! This appeared to settle the hangover and occupied us whilst the rain continued to fall.
After a 8/10 flat white at the Fat Duck we headed to lake Te Anau for a Catamaran cruise up the lake to the glow worm caves. We watched the obligatory video about the life cycle of Glow Worms then went on a walking/boat tour underground. We were both really amazed at this underground universe that was like looking at galaxies full of stars. The glow worms had lots of young, so there were thousands of tiny lights glowing from the roof of the caves. The caves themselves were quite spectacular, with the recent rainfall swelling the underground rivers and waterfalls. Despite being a little sceptical, we were both really impressed by this trip! No piccies I'm afraid as cameras etc banned inside caves.
After a quite food stop we headed to the Te Anau wildlife park and were very fortunate to see 3 Takahe, a very rare bird with around 350 living in the local rainforest covered mountains.
We did a short section of the world renowned Kepler Track (a 4-5 day walking track) before heading home for a yummy stir dry courtesy of superwok!
