The hostel had a great bar area and seating around the pool. We were very hungry by this point so we ordered as soon as we checked in. We made friends with the barman who was from Australia but had moved to Cambodia over a year ago during his travels. He still hadn't seen much of south east Asia because he had been offered a job at a hostel in Kampot quite early on in his travels.
That night we chatted more to Chris the barman. As the evening progressed he changed cocktails to suit our tastes and added more shots for free. He had so many stories and it was good to talk to him about Australia. He told us a particularly chilling story about when he previously worked at the hostel in kampot. One of the travellers staying at the hostel died in a drunken motorcycle accident and he had to be the one to talk to the 23 year old mans parents. That must be the worst possible responsibility involved in working in a hostel. We also got chatting to a couple of guys from England and we found out that one was about to start a masters at Loughborough. The night ended with Chris on our side of the bar providing us free drinks. We would have bought more but we had so few dollars left for the last few days in Cambodia.
The next day we bought breakfast from some local stalls nearby. We must have been located in a very local part of Phonm penh as right by our hostel was a whole street of food stalls. It sold everything from waffles to exotic fruit to fish. We then got a tuk tuk to the killing fields and the S21 prison. We learnt all about the Rogue Khmer take over of Cambodia and all the brutal killings during the reign of Pol Pot. It was very well done with audio guides where everyone could walk around quietly and reflect on the stories being told. The prison was particularly eery as you could see the many rooms where people were tortured until they confessed to being part of secret services.
After an emotionally draining morning we had food back at the hostel and went to our room for a nap. We slept for longer than expected but woke up in time for dinner. We spent our last few dollars on food and prepared our bags for the flight the next day. We negotiated with a tuk tuk driver to take us to the airport the next day. But in the morning he wasn't there as apparently he had been offered a better deal taking someone else to the airport. Not ideal at 6 in the morning. Luckily the hostel summoned another driver quite easily.
