Lets Go Truckin!
After our crappest journey so far - for too many reasons to go into here! We arrived on Java on our way to see Mount Bromo. This is in fact the wussiest of all the Indonesian volcanos to choose - and since we're not normally ones for declining a challenging activity I think I should explain: the various bouts of illnes that I've (Lou) had over the past few weeks and the associated lack of food haven't left me in the best state for climbin a massive volcano in the searing heat. So we opted for the insteresting landscape and great views of Bromo - which is just a small hop up once you've got a bus up to the nearby village. AND we were so high up that a cool breeze was blowing, and it was even quite chill when we got up at 5.30 to see the sun rise. This was also our first brush with tropical rain, although lucklily at the time we happened to have the distractions of the international footie and a cold beer on hand...
On to Yogyakarta for our more culural visits - Borobodur - (I think the worlds) biggest Buddhist stupa and Parambanan - a nearly as large ruined Hindu temple site with some cool statues. Both had amazing carvings, grand scales and beautiful settings, unfortunately they also had hourdes of Indonesian tourists and students stalking us to practice their English (a common learning technique in Indonesia) and take our photos. All quite strange.
Yogya was an interesting introduction to the art of haggling (at which we are quite pants), to the hustle and bustle of an Asian city (although we had chosen it for its relative calm) and to the monsoon as we had some particularly prolonged and deluge like rainstorms (but luckily while we were in the bus on the way there mostly). We're contemplating moving northwards more rapidly than planned to escape the rest of the monsoon that is heading our way.
