Cairns was an eventful week but was certainly a highlight. Saying goodbye to everyone we met up the coast was nice. We stayed at a huge hostel called Gilligans, such a party hostel. Even has it's own club next door. We managed to stay in the same room as Jess, who kindly cooked us steak, roasties and veg for when we arrived. We returned the favour by cooking her, pesto pasta, with pine nuts, poached eggs and avocado. She did also cook us a full English breakfast for dinner too, shes a keeper. Sad when we said goodbye though, I shall definitely look forward to seeing her again, either traveling or when we return back to the UK. We organised our week so that our first night we went out clubbing with all the other drunk backpackers. Was certainly a great night, I don't remember much. However, I was told I fell over on my ass a few times. Getting this drunken night out the way to allow us to have 2 straight days of tours that we had already pre-booked, and also I booked a skydive on my final day. Which meant for the 3 days straight I had to wake up at either 6am or 7am for a tour, which would last all day. All would of been well, if my bloody phone hadn't broken. My screen had come away from the phone so I couldn't do anything. This became more frustrating when I was on a tour all day and by the time I returned back to the hostel, all the phone repair shops would be shut. On top of my phone, my beard trimmer has broken as well as my camera. So I wasn't able to get any photos of my time in Cairns. It doesn't end there, as we was trying to sort out all our paperwork for our next trip to New York and Cuba. Was able to sort some things at the library but had no joy of contacting three different cuban embassys. They all went to answer machine or no one would answer. All we wanted to know was, are we able to get a visa on arrival when we fly from New York to Mexico to Cuba? Our airline didn't help is, which is disgusting. When we asked the New York airport, they would tell us to call our airline. Then our airline would tell us to call embassy. We call the embassy on numerous occasions, as well as, Kyles mum called and my dad tried but no answer.
Figured it all out once we arrived in New York because we were flying from there, we went to the airline we were flying with and asked them. They looked into their system and told us they we can get it in Mexico, which we did. Only cost £15 each, although some Asian girl was told she didn't need one from her airline. When she arrived in Cuba they made her pay $80 for it.
First tour was a boat trip and snorkel around the Great Barrier Reef. The boat trip to the reef was sickening, I never thought I would get sea sick but I did due to the size of the waves, so choppy. I was amazed how far the reef was from the coast. Normally, a reef is close by the coast as it is more shallow and warmer. However, the Great Barrier is located a few miles out at sea, a good 45 minute boat ride. And when we went snorkeling it was so shallow, it was weird how the reef just sat in the middle of the ocean. Saw some great fish mind, I saw the usual huge fish, turtles, a huge barracuda and parrot fish. But to top it off, I saw a huge shark. Only myself and this other guy saw it, so cool. Overall it was a really good tour and worth the money.
On the other hand, the Waterfall wanderers tour was average. I wanted to go home early as it was too cold to keep jumping in these waterfalls that looked rubbish with the murky water. We all went in the first one as it had a natural rock slide but after that, the rest were very average and cold. The tour guide was funny in my opinion but got on some peoples t*** as his jokes were just dad jokes. They made me laugh more as they were just shocking jokes.
Then to top my week off in Cairns, keeping in mind, that I have gotten nowhere with the visa, phone or camera. And I got a cold too and lost my voice, probably from the stress of failing to sort things out. I went for my skydive, drove two hours to Mission Beach to be told they have cancelled it due to the weather. So I wasted a whole day waiting a around with no phone to go on, so I just slept all day. Luckily I did get a refund but still very disappointed that I haven't jumped 15,000ft out of a plane onto the beach. I got home from the skydive, packed my bag and went cinemas to use my two free cinema tickets that I won back in Melbourne at work. Disappointingly, we watched Displicable Me 3 which was that boring, I fell sleep watching it.
