Still in Kuala Lumpur volunteering. Went out with the two girls in our hostel as it was free drinks for them "Ladies night", but they kindly bought us a pint each and kept on feeding us their drinks, not a great idea to be fair. I felt so rough the next day and i have to teach the refugee children. The children are refugees from Afghanistan and their learning abilities completely differ. As the classes are supposedly divided up on their English ability, which means you have age groups from 7 to 18 in one class. The teachers who teach are not qualified teachers and so they love it when us western volunteers go in as they actually learn something, and correctly. I was correcting the teacher i was assisting how to write time. Me and Kyle decided that we would do a lesson plan and actually have a structure for these children to learn. The teachers say, 'teach them what you want, what you feel comfortable with'!
Kyle started to clear the drains around the house as stale water has been sitting there for ages, and the stench was horrendous. Needed doing as it attracts s*** loads of mosquitos and rats! So i helped out and swept and clear all the drains so that water flowed properly, didn't get a thank you when we told the owner. We feel like our work is not appreciated around here. For example i replaced the paper that was under a class top on the dinner table, to make it look clean. I told the owner and she just changed the subject to chopping up a faking onion!
However she did invite us to her friends house warming pool party. Brand new apartments with outdoor pool on 6th floor and BBQ, oh and had a quick spell in the sauna. Ate so much food and demolished all the chicken as it's been a while since I've had chicken. Nightmare getting there and back, took 2 hours on the bus. Good job it cost less than a £1 one way.
I must admit, I'm getting restless doing this volunteering and having to live with other people. I want my own space and to be able to do what i want. Looking forward to the rest of my travels. I've booked all my internal flights for Philippines. I had to book 6 flights as it's difficult, dangerous and lengthy to travel via boat and bus in Philippines. Cost us £400 for all the flights but should be worth it!
Decided to stay in Kuala Lumpur for 5 more days but in a hostel right in the city centre which was a brilliant idea, as everything was around us. It was nice to actually see the main bit of the city for few days too, but i must admit i am really struggling to find a nice pair of trainers. Surprising as Kuala Lumpur has 66 shopping malls but they all sell the same stuff!
The dreaded travelers day approached me, suddenly when I struck a high fever on my last night out in Kuala Lumpur, and for sure there was something wrong with me. My temperature taken from my ears was 39.9 degrees which is way too high. I knew straight away it was Dengue Fever. The mosquitos that spread Dengue Fever is the same b******s that carry Zika. I had to travel from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka feeling like a lump of lead, i could barely move my body but i had to carry my back pack onto the underground to get the bus which we pre paid for. Checked into a nice hotel so that i had a private room, good job, because i was being heavily sick. Felt so bad on the third day, i decided to go to the hospital, as I couldn't keep any water, tablets or food down. Took all afternoon to get sorted by the Doctor, although they were relatively quick in diagnosing me and getting me onto a ward. They confirmed it was Dengue Fever and that i would need to stay in, great! No air-con, food was s***, cleanliness was fairly bad for a hospital. On the other hand, the staff were brilliant and they get me back to normal. Poor old Kyle though, he's literally had to sort everything out for me, like ringing the Insurance, visiting me in hospital bringing me snacks. I begged the Doctor to release a day before than he should. They only reason he was keeping me was because my platelets were descending but i really wanted to get into a hostel, have a nice shower and bed, did wonders. If you thought i was skinny before, well, i could blend in with the Africans now. I'm in need of fattening up so, food hampers would be great, or some cash!
I shall be glad to leave Malaysia, heading for Singapore soon for few days then off to Philippenes for a month.
