We have come a long long way in the last few days, all the way from Kuala Lumpur (which Jon thought was a made up place) to Krabi in Thailand.
Kuala Lumpur is a lovely capital city, although Jon was very dissapointed by the lack of dancing monkeys with drums! The main landmark is the Petronas twin towers, the 4th tallest building in the world, the steel and glass towers look fantastic illuminated against the moody night sky, like something out of a science fiction film. We spent a long time admiring the cities lake gardens, and the independence monument before eating lots of yummy fried rice. Unfortunately it rained for the entire duration of our stay, so we didn't get to see much.
From KL we took a bus up a very windy road to the Cameron Highlands, which is a huge hill station covered in jungle, tea plantations and strawberry farms. Over the 3 days we decided to forgo hiring a guide and walk the jungle trails ourselves. We started off with jungle trail 10, which we were told was "quite easy and only 6 kilometres", what they didn't tell us was that all 6km were walking either almost vertically upwards or down a very slippery scree slope. The walk ended abruptly at a power station which we couldn't walk around, so we then completed the 6km in reverse.
The following day we took jungle trail 10 (6km but quite flat) through some beautiful jungle forest, admiring the flowers and birds as we went. We then walked 6km up hill to the Boh tea plantations which were just as stunning, the green leaves look almost luminous and cover the entire landscape for miles around. After a cream tea we asked about the bus, and discovered we had to walk another 8km to the main road. After making it there we waited about an hour for the bus, before discovering it might in fact be another hour, or maybe not turn up at all. We did eventually make it back to the guesthouse however.
I would definitely reccomend a trip to the area for anyone visiting Malaysia, the scenery is stunning, people are friendly and evrywhere serves cream teas.
The following day we took a bus to Ipoh, waited there for 13 hours, took an overnight bus to hat yai in Thailand, passing immigration on the way and then ended up on another bus to Krabi on the coast. Arriving in Krabi, 30 hours after leaving our last hotel we neither looked nor smelt very nice. We were dragged into a "tourist information" who arranged a guesthouse for us on the coast, before we realised we had no Thai baht. No problem, the owners drove me on there moped to the ATM, only for me to realise Jon had our credit card. Oops.
We are now at Ao Nang beach which is stunning, will update you in a few days when we've seen a bit more. For now we're very happy to have clean clothes, a nice room, great food and the sea to swim in.
