I don't think we were really mentally prepared or this day. We got up, had breakfast, which was fairly decent, then decided to walk and get some coffee. About a block down the road we turned back because we couldn't remember the exact time our flight left and decided it would be a better idea to get coffee at the airport rather than miss the plane. It turned out to be a good idea as it was pretty busy at the airport. We also decided to take a cab instead of the public transit. It was kind of expensive but it was worth it to not stress about getting there on time.
We found Delta's check in counter and stood in line for a while. There were a lot of people there. As soon as we got to the counter someone pushed in front of us and set a package down on the scale. He had apparently already been through the line and thought he needed to give his package to the lady that hadn't even started helping us yet. She told him over and over again that he needed to take it to 'oversized luggage' but he kept setting it down on the scale. To his credit it wasn't a very big package (twss) but I think because it was basically a box wrapped in brown paper packaging it couldn't be checked as regular luggage. He definitely did not understand as evidence by his persistence. The girl was obviously flustered by the exchange and it didn't help that the guy didn't speak very good English. But he eventually left and we got checked in.
The line to get through security wasn't that long but it took forever and we were once again thankful we got there early. We also scored by getting a table at the little cafe that was by our gate. Kim got a coffee I got a whiskey and we shared a faggato, a delicious pastry, kind of like a chocolate filled croissant, but better. We did some shopping at the duty free, I found the rum I wanted, though they only had the light rum and I kind of wanted the dark, but oh well it will be good for mojitos!! We ordered another round of drinks, this time Kim got a spritz! Our new favorite concoction. We also shared a sandwich that was quite delectable.
We boarded the plane by kind of cutting in front of everybody. I figured since it happened so much to us this trip we deserved to get in front of everybody else for a change. It was nice since we were all the way in the back o the plane we didn't have to wait for people to get out of our way to get to our seats. As we sat there we saw Mr. Oversized package himself and laughed at him a little because as he put his bags up a little orange sticker fell into his hair and he didn't notice. Then we stopped laughing because he sat down in the empty seat next to us. But we immediately started laughing again when we did a little stealth photo shoot with him in it. It's the little things that make travel days bearable.
We took off and learned the flight was just over 9hrs. Unfortunately we didn't have the cool video monitors in the seats where you could watch anything we wanted like we did on the flight over. But they still showed some okay movies. Plus the beer and wine was free!!!
It was a pretty bumpy 9hrs and change, but it passed with relative ease. It was nice being in the back because it made it easy to get up and ask for extra beers!
JFK was a s***-show. We had a 3hr layover and 2 of those were spent in line waiting to get through customs. Needless to say we were pretty annoyed by the time we got through it. We had a little time so we got coffee and then waited some more for everyone else to board; the New Yorkers were not letting any cutsies happen. But on a high note we were seated behind a loud toddler...
This flight was a little less than 6hrs, but we sat on the runway for about an hour. It was also a little disconcerting that this lady's voice kept coming over the intercom. Her name was Nancy and she kept saying: "Hello? We're ready for take off, can you hear me?" and "I can't hear you, hello?" Then a guy would come on and say: "Hello Nancy? Is this better?" It was all kind of ridiculous.
We eventually took off. There was no freebies on this flight. Not the beer or wine. Not the food. Not even the headphones! We bought a sandwich and a cheese plate but skipped the headphones. Besides they were showing a movie we'd seen a few times already on the boat, Something Borrowed. A good movie but not worth buying cheap ass headphones for. Instead we kind of just passed out.
Flying into Seattle was strange. There was massive cloud coverage so no lights from the city were visible. It looked like we were flying over water. We eventually broke through the clouds and being home finally started to set in. Though our journey was still far from being over.
We picked up our bags from baggage claim and met Rose, who had been house sitting for us, and who had our car. It was strange driving again after being away for so long. We dropped Rose off at her house and drove the last leg of the journey home. We got to the house around midnight, which meant it was 9am in Venice, which is about the time we got in the cab to head to the airport, which means we had been traveling for just about 24hrs... What a long freaking day!
We stayed up for a bit longer and watched some tv then went to bed. The trip of a lifetime was finally over. It felt great to be home, though it was a little sad our honeymoon had ended. What an amazing time!! Next time will be even better!!!!
