On arrival in San Juan Del Sur we suffered the misfortune of our first choice hostel being full. Instead we headed for Hospedaje Elizabeth. Inside the owner showed us a room which came complete with 3 beds (a double and two singles), a bathroom, cable TV and a kitchen. We travelled down from Granada to Isla de Ometepe on the 2nd of September. Isla de Ometepe is situated in Lake Nicaragua, which we had previously seen in Granada. We were able to catch a bus directly from Granada to the Rivas, at Rivas we took a taxi to the port as we were in danger of missing our boat. The bus we took from Granada to Rivas was an old American yellow school bus which they call chicken buses over here due to the liberal nature of what is allowed...

We woke up in León, Nicaragua still a little weary from our previous days travel but excited to start exploring another country. León is one of Nicaragua'a three major cities along with Granada and the capital Managua. Managua was chosen as capital due to the fierce rivalry between the other two cities which involved many years of conflict. Volcano day arrived at 5.30am as we had to prepare for our 6.00am transport to Pacaya volcano. We packed our bags with necessities such as water, breakfast and marshmallows to roast. We got picked up and drove the 1 ½ hours to the start point which was about half way up the 2000m climb. At the start point we were approached by numerous children all selling walking sticks to help haul ourselves up the volcano. We purchased one each and prepared to get going. ...
