Two weeks into our epic adventure we have made it to Ho CHi Minh City, better known as Saigon or as we like to call it, the city of motorbikes. We have made it through an international missing person search with the British Embassy/Cambodian police, a bag snatching and taxi abduction along with many many dodgy moped/tuk-tuk rides but we are only getting warmed up.
Saigon is a crazy place, crossing the road is the easiest way to get ur heart pumping something thats hard to get used to. Tho we are glad we dont have to listen to the "please mister one dollar one dollar" and the "open you heart, open your wallet" routines anymore. The nightlife is good in Saigon but Vietnam will have to do better to equal Cambodia's party tricks.
We took a wee trip out of town to the Cu Chi Tunnels, we've all seen the films of the Vietnam war but its something else to see what happened from the Vietnamese side. They really do have a hatred of Americans which is understandable after speaking to them, everyone has lost some family member. Yet they do still provide warnings to any Americans coming through that they may/will be offended! The place we visited was the headquarters of the Viet Cong, and after the Americans arrived it turned out this was their selected HQ too but it too them quite a while to work this out because of how well they hid in the tunnels. The traps the Viet Cong set up were ingenious and they gave some interesting names too such as the presidents birthday cake and the see-saw trap. We went for a duck walk through the tunnels and Im glad I didnt have to live there 10 metres below the surface, it can get quite claustrophobic and hot.
We went out for a while on the shoting range at the tunnels with an AK-47, making a mess of some wooden deer and rabbit, not good on the ears tho. Also took a wee trip to the War Reminants Museum to see some of the gear the Americans left behind, tanks, planes and artillery, along with lots of pictures of injured Vietnamese, rangeing from Napalm and toxic gases to limbs blown of and people shot from point blank range.
Saigon is definately work seeing but glad we left when we did, especially since we are heading to the beach again. Onto the night train, we have cabins this time round but Id imagine the bed bugs are already waiting for us!
