Ron Nissen
= thoughtful verses for the pilgrim (with good eye sight)
Matthew Fitzhenry
I don't consider myself a French scholar at all, but here is my attempt at the translation:
Pilgrim, where are you going?
Why do you graze (along?) this long voyage
Hiker, where are you going?
Your backpack for everything committed
Maybe you don’t know where you are going
That you (?) on this path
It’s possible that it be faith
Maybe you are not Christian
There is God already for a thousand years
That great adventure is born
Walker, you are the decendant
Of men who (?)
You will traverse regions,
valleys, groves, villages
The rocks will recount to you,
Stories of Pilgrimage
You would (?) the rivers,
The mountains, the Pyrenees
Only yesterday it was the border
During the hours you will climb
Then you will be in Spain
On the “Camino” you will suffer
like Emperor Charlemagne,
He too has gone there
With the Basques you will sing
You will drink the wine of La Rioja
Castille will burn you
And Galicia you will reach
And when only one among so many others
You (?) in the distance
The Cathedral of the Apostle
You will no longer forget the way
