The Lion Monument is dedicated to the memories of the Swiss mercenaries who were killed during the French revolution in Paris. The service of the Swiss was so valued by others that about 40,000 served under foreign banners. The Swiss were hired by so many that they were being pitted against their own country men. They decided they would not continue to be hired out to kill each other and became a neutral country, as they remain still.
