Example of the old thatch roof houses that are still around Ireland today. The story goes (as I was told) that the birds nest in the roofing. Then the cats climb to the roof to get the birds and the dogs follow the cats. When it rains the reeds are very slippery so the cats and dogs come tumbling down. Hence the term "raining cats and dogs"
