So I finally succumbed to a hangover. Went a bit crazy on some blue cocktails in our 500 baht all you can eat and drink party. Very funny night though.
This morning we all packed up and came down for our last breakfast (I was just on the orange juice) then hopped onto the bus for our trip to sangkhlaburi. About an hour in we stopped for food, (passed on that again, still felt very rough)
The next stop was at the "hellfire pass" museum. Some background - in ww2 japan invaded Thailand and Burma. But needed a supply route for the troops before they tried to invade india. Hence they built the 445km 'death railway'. Using 60,000 allied prisoners of war and 200,000 Thai slaves. Over 100,000 of them died making the railway.
The particular part we were looking at was called "hellfire pass" because it had been particularly difficult to cut through the mountain at that place.
Really great museum, lots of info about the pass, and some nice clean toilets, particularly welcome after the ones at the hostel we were used to.
After this we had a walk down to the actual pass (still with a banging headache) wasn't quite as dramatic as they had made out but nonetheless interesting.
Back onto the bus - watched the end of our dodgy pirate version of the social network we'd got at the market, then snoozed the rest of the way.
Arrived in sangkhlaburi about 5, and checked out our digs for the next 2 weeks. Pretty standard as hostels go, nice big room with a fan and air con, and a shower proudly displaying a sticker insisting the heating element was made in the uk! Does smell a bit musky though.
Following this we had a quick meeting with our new staff. (still have the 4 from last week, just gained another 4 because were all doing lots of different activities) then a tour of the tiny town of sangkhlaburi. Apparently its not in most maps, and the weather app on my phone couldn't find it. So it must be small!
Bit of a shock going from bangkok (massive), to kanchanaburi (still had 10 or so bars, plenty of restaurants etc) to sangkhlaburi (1 bar, 2 shops - you get the idea)
Headed out to a tiny restaurant that looked more like someones back garden with a few chairs and tables in. But has some very nice pad siew (veg and wide noodles with tofu)
Still a little bit hungover at this point, as were most people, so headed back to the hostel for a quiet evening in. Stopping off at the 7-11 for a disgustingly nice chocolate bread and chocolate spread toastie. There were loads of interesting looking Thai snacks I'm eager to try out.
So sat writing my blog in the lounge, getting dive bombed by all sorts of crazy bugs. They're a lot worse here than the last place!
Thanks all for reading, from the sounds of it a lot of you are following! Which is cool :) also makes me want to update the blog more regularly, without going over the top of course. Got wifi for the next 2 weeks which should be good.
Anyway, for now,
Josh xx

Momma Just back from the Trafford Centre, yummy sushi :) Amelia and I noticed the bill was halve what we'd normally pay....wonder why ! XXx
Meals Dawg Hey kid, the sushi was good :) Thinking i'll be moving into your room shortly, but i'm a little afraid of the loft monsters. Sounds like Thailand's pretty awesome. Bring me back a chocolate toastie :) Meals xx
Claire Shann Hi Josh. Have had no internet for the last couple of days - so I have not been able to keep up with you - back on now. Sounds like an interesting visit to the museum. I love hearing about all that stuff. Hope you enjoy the next couple of weeks. I now feel compelled to make Thai food all the time now that I read about what you are eating. Just off for a run in the Chiltern Hills. My advice on hangovers is 4 nurofen and 2 pints of water before you go to sleep! Keep up the blogging. Claire xxx
Steve Nadler These entries are great! Sounds like a load of fun
stephanie Hey Joshie- sounds really interesting- have you ever seen "Bridge on the River Kwai"? It's all about building the railway, &, particularly a bridge across the river Kwai. (Surprise, surprise!) Sangkhlaburi sounds pretty small but i find it incredible that it has a 711! Keep the blog coming! Sx PS Claire's advice to avoid hangovers is good, but I would add that if you can drink a pint of orange juice, or take a Berocca, before bed, (as well as the nurofen) you should wake up bright- eyed, & bushy- tailed!
