Early Monday morning I went to Bulawayo to Matopos reserve where I went rhino trekking. It was beautiful my guide a guy called Andy was extremely knowledgable about the area and the wildlife. He drove us into the park to a spot where the local officers told us they had seen the rhinos earlier in the morning. I jumped out the truck with the other volunteers Alex, Diane and Marina and started to follow Andy through the bush. He showed us the footprints and the imprints of their skin where the rhinos had rolled. Further on he pointed out that a rhino had walked through the path we were walking as there was mud on the long grass that had rubbed off them after their mud bath. We saw holes that Aardvarks make and were told they make homes for over 17 different species of animal. The holes act as a pocket for water for animals and also helps air rate the soil.
Over an hour later we were still following the tracks of the rhinos however we didn't see them. So after a trek back to the car and a little drive we all got out and tried another spot. This time with a lot more success. This time we walked for 5minutes into the bush before coming across 3 adult rhinos and a 2month old baby. Incredible! I was able to stand mere metres away from these incredible animals. They had all had their horns removed to protect them against poachers. They also have armed guards with them 24/7 they have recently paired up a police officer with each guards to double the man force. It's sad to not see them with their horns but I'm very glad they decided to take measures to prevent the murder of these animals, they are seriously under threat with not much sign of it slowing down.
We enjoyed 20/30 minutes with them and then we let them be, munching their way through the bush. I then enjoyed a nice lunch, it was the first time I had properly eaten in days after being ill with salmonella.
On our way out of the park we stopped off at some cave paintings that were around 10,000 years old done by the San people. Their depictions were incredible, they drew every animal perfectly. It was a surreal day, me, a girl from Haywards Heath in the bush in Africa standing with wild rhino and tracing the outline of the cave paintings on the face of the overhanging rock. What a privilege.
