Jen's Travel Diary
Saturday - I checked out of the hostel in 'NYC' and headed down to the bus terminal. I caught the Greyhound bus at 11am and arrived into 'Boston' at 4pm. It was a bit of a trek to the hostel as the "T" (subway system) was undergoing repairs. But after a replacment bus and a bit of a walk I arrived at "Beantown Hostel". I then found out the the room that I had reserved on the phone was not written in the book, so after a conversation with the manager I got a bed on the floor for the first night (reduced rate) and then was booked into a dorm for the further 2 nights. The hostel is actually in a good location quite near "Quincy Market" and "Faneuil Hall" but as a hostel it is pretty basic!! Once I had unpacked I headed out to get some dinner and watch the "Red Sox" match. I ended up in "Tap" bar where I met the Currans (they were really nice, funny people who brought me a beer) and we all watched the game together.
Sunday - I woke up very excited today as I was off to a live "Red Sox" game!! I headed out first to do some sightseeing. I decided to try and see things that I have not previously visited on my trip to Boston before. I walked down towards "Boston Common" passing the very impressive "Massachusetts State House" and also the monument of "Shaw" - the leader of one of the Civil War armies. Once at the common I took time to wander and then have a sit in the sun, it was really warm today. I passed the "Frog Pond" where children were playing in the fountains, the "Washington" statue and also a bizzare huge blown up balloon - nobody knew what it represented! I then walked to the "Swan lake" which was very pretty with trees and flowers in the the gardens surrounding the lake. I then headed down "Commonwealth Ave" mall which was lined with oak trees and also at every intersection statues and memorials stood representing war heros and freedom. Finally I got to "Fenway Park" and I went off to the store to get my replica hat and shirts. I took in all the atmosphere; the street vendors selling hotdogs and peanuts, fans with their shirts and flags, the entertainers and muscians. The seat that I had was brilliant low down right near first base - what a view. We won 11-3 and I saw 2 Home Runs and also some really outstanding plays. After the game I headed to the players entrance and saw some of the multi-million pound stars leave!! Johnny Damon YAY!!
Monday - Up today early to do some sightseeing before heading to "Fenway". First up I walked over the "Charlestown Bridge " to "Bunker Hill monument". It was nice to walk around the posh brick buildings with the old style latern streetlamps and American flags hanging on the front of the houses. I climbed the 257 steps inside the monument and once I reached the top got some fantastic views of Boston. While I was up there I met a Kiwi guy called Mark, who had just finished at a summer camp in 'Maine'. We walked together from the monument and took the "Freedom Trail" route past the "USS Constitution" ship and back over the bridge. We then wandered to "Faneuil Hall" and grabbed a bite to eat in the "Quincy Market" foodcourt. We then walked past the "Paul Revere House", through the common to "Newbury St". After a bit of window-shopping we then walked to "Fenway" and I showed Mark the stadium. After that we went to "Boston Works" pub before I headed to the game. It was realy nice to meet him as we talked about Asia and travelling, he had been to Europe too. I then headed to the game and found my seat in the bleachers (another good seat positon in the ground) right near the opposition ballpen (where the pitchers practise). It was great to see how they controlled the pitches they made and also the types of pitches they threw. The "Red Sox" were 2-0 up in the 2nd inning when it began to rain. After a rain delay of 2h the game began again and we won 10-6 - I saw 3 home runs!! I then caught the "T" back to the hostel at midnight.
Tuesday - I checked out of the hostel and then got a lovely bagel breakfast at the shop next door. It was a really dull and rainy day so no further sightseeing was possible. So I just sat at the hostel and chilled out, reading my book and chatting to the receptionist Amy. I got a taxi to the airport at 3.30pm and checked in for my flight. The flight for "London Heathrow" left at 7.30pm.
