We quite liked Veliko Tarnovo and it improved our opinion of Bulgaria after staying in Sofia. The old town is quite spectacular and there is a large fortress on a hill overlooking the town. The weather was cold and wet the whole time we were there but the town was beautiful none the less. Again we stayed in a very nice hostel that provided dinner, breakfast, beer and a social common room. The building was a beautiful old cottage in the old town only a minute away...

The best thing about our stay in Sofia was our hostel which provided breakfast, dinner and beer in a common room with tons of other travellers all keen to socialise. Sofia was nice enough with some huge buildings, monuments and statues but we didn't think it was a city to recommend to others. We found Thessaloniki to be more of a means to an end, we had about half a day to explore the town and feel like we saw everything we wanted to see in that time. The town is interesting as it was a mix of the old town portion on the hill and the new town portion on the flats all the way to the water where many bars and cafes were filled with partiers regardless of the bad weather. Trikala was our first little European town and it lived up to all of our expectations. The strange thing about Trikala is that it has a main street full of cafés absolutely packed with people (so much so that we thought there must have been an event on) but none of the cafés serve food.
