We found Nice to be a lovely city and a great first taste of France. The buildings are so French and the croissants are to die for. We arrived in Milan with no expectations and were actually expecting not to enjoy it so we found ourselves pleasantly surprised. The buildings were worth seeing just for their size and magnificence. If ever we wanted the weather to be perfect, it was while hiking around the five lands of the Cinque Terre, and we couldn't have been more fortunate. Lucca is a cute little town completely surrounded by a 4km long old city wall, apparently making it the only fully fortified town in Italy. It's not on the Italian tourist trail so we got to enjoy walking around the town and through the old streets without too many crowds. Naples lived up to southern Italy's reputation for us, seeming like a town in decay. The areas we visited were quite run-down. We were quite amazed to see how much poorer the south of Italy really is compared to the north.
