Hong Kong Day 2 (30.05.2012).
Jet lag behind us and ready to embark on our first full day in Hong Kong. After almost wilting upon exiting the flat we managed to grab some bread and set off on our first expediaition. It is soooo hot and humid here!
First stop Lantau, Hong Kong's "green lung". After a short train journey from Hong Kong Station to Lantau we took a "crystal" (glass bottomed) cable car - Ngong Ping 360 - to the temple in the clouds visiting both the Big Buddha (apparently the largest outdoor seated buddha in the world) and Po Lin Monestry - the largest of Hong Kong's Buddhist temples. Po Lin Monestry is a alcohol and meat free zone, we were able to enjoy a veggie 'delux' feast in the monestry though Adam hated every second of it! The toilet situation was interesting (see photos), still not sure how it works :-S.
We then went on a walk through tea plantations and followed the "wisdom path". Adam of course loved all the tea. Great views.. amazing atmosphere... very hairy caterpillers!!!
Later we finally ascended up the many steps to meet the big man himself.. Big Buddha.. After enjoying the aircon within the Buddha we then took a bus to Mui Wo beach, quick look around and then caught the high speed ferry back to Hong Kong.
Hong Kong is a great city.. amazing atmosphere and charm. So much still to explore!
On arrival back in Hong Kong we met our guide post work (aka Coop) who took us to a little Dim Sum place where the boys proceeded to eat many unknown Dim Sum dumplings.. and chicken feet!! Adam's exotic treat number one.. apparently "crunchy".
After a speedy shower and change we then caught a taxi to the "Happy Valley Races", a huge horseracing course in the middle of Hong Kong.. Surreal! The races take place most wednesdays.. so glad we managed to catch it. Beer and betting!!! Loved it! No wins on my part sadly but Adam won $150 when his horse came in 1st.. Happy times. Thanks to Coop and Cally!!
Hmmm the night didn't end there.. Following the last race at 11pm we caught a taxi to "the Globe".. Sipped 'proper jobs' and ate 'scampi fries' - what tourists ah!! Several beers later we found ourselves in McDonald's at 3am sobering up on hamburgers (boys only)... Drunken tourists but good times!
