We have been in the Province of Quebec now for 1 week, and it's been great! We have been spoiled at Max and Chantal's house, we chilled out on Friday, but ventured into Montreal on Saturday where we wandered around the old port, saw the Notre Dame Cathedral, visited Chinatown and the Quartier Latin. Montreal is lovely, a real mix of North America and French buildings and culture.
On Sunday, Max and Chantal returned home and we all went out for dinner (Sunday evening Ribs Special, and we weren't ill after them, so we are safe in the knowledge we can eat ribs!!).
On Monday, we went to Mount Royal with Chantal since she was off work. Once you reach the top you get a really nice view of the city. At the top is actually where Bruce Willis and Matthew Perry stand in 'the whole 9 yards' (Jacqui and Alison, I thought you might be interested in that!). That evening, they had some Moose meat so we ate that with stovies that I made so we could bring something from Scotland to the table along with the moose meat!!
The next few days we pretty much just hung out, went to the pool, ate and drank! On Tuesday night Chantal invited some friends round and we had fondue and this other thing I can't remember what its called but you grill the meat on the top, then underneath there are little trays you put the meat that you griled on there and cover it with cheese, then put it under the grill to melt it, whatever it was it was really good! On Wednesday we went out for some Poutine which is traditional Quebecois food - fries, gravy and cheese curds! Sounds gross, tastes delicious! then we went for a few drinks, including a rooftop bar which we got a great view of the city - at expensive prices, $9 for a glass of wine.... so we just had one and moved on somewhere else.
On thursday we met up with James, who we also met in Asia on the same trip! He took us out for smoked meat (another Montreal tradition) and then we went for some beers at a micro brewery. We stayed with James that night as he lives in the city, then the next day we got on the bus to Quebec City.
It took 3 hours on the bus and it was pretty comfortable, which was good! Quebec City is beautiful, we got there at about 5pm, had a wander and then went for some dinner. In the evening we had a couple of drinks at the hostel bar (which was dead so we didn't stay long) and then headed out to a 'boite à chanson' which is one man and a guitar belting out french classics and the occasional english songs! It was great fun, everyone was singing along in french, then we were singing along when the english ones were played!
The next day we walked around the walled city, and ventured out a little too. It's so pretty here, and there are some beautiful buildings. In the evening we watched some live music in the square, then met some Canadians and an English guy and drank for most of the evening with them, playing a drinking game called Moose!!
We got the bus back this morning, and are back staying with Max and Chantal. We will be here for another couple of days, then we have bought a flight on Wednesday to fly over to Vancouver. We were going to try and drive, but it's working out cheaper to fly - and since the flight is about 5 and a half hours, I don't know how long it would take on a bus and it would be really expensive!
So we're going to enjoy the next few days here, having a bbq tonight, then I'll update you from the West Coast! Off to put some pics on now so have a look!
