Me and Australian Sam went over the water and into Uruguay for a few days. The boat looked like a luxury cruise ship, suddenly making us question if we were actually on the right voyage (voyage ha). We went through customs and put our bags through the x ray machines at Buenos Aires, which meant that when we arrived on Uruguayan soil, all we had to do was walk off the ferry and get our bearings. The three hour journey went quick as a football team from Buenos Aires were playing in what was the equivalent of the first leg of a champions league semi final, so we we had well and truly been lumbered with all their supporters. Sleeping wasn't an option so I made my way upto the top deck and there more were, with their teams flag dangling off the boat, jumping and singing away.
When we arrived in Colonia, we promptly jumped onto the next bus, and took the 2 and half hour bus journey to the country´s capital, Montevideo. I immediately got a snapshot of the horse and cart going down the cobbled streets, which seems to appear to be Uruguays postcard picture face. It is not too impressive though when you consider that the horse is only there to carry bags of rubbish in the cart. Just maybe the concept of dustbin men has not quite reached Uruguay at the time I am writing this. The next morning we got back on the bus to Colonia, where a full day of walking around this historic town/city was ahead of us. When we got there, we just ´mooched´ around really, and didn't exactly do anything strenuous.
A few observations from my short time in the country
The country´s population seemed quite ´fresh faced´, and all appeared to be smartly dressed. This was a surprise to us, as was the beautiful scenery which surrounded us. All we had heard a few days before was how poor, dull and typically boring the whole country was. We didn´t agree with none of that bull to be fair.
Colonia most certainly was geared for tourists, in comparison to Montevideo where we were the only English in the city (sam will kill me for saying she is English ha). Even the other guests in the hostel in Montevideo were Uruguayan. We were both pleasantly surprised by Uruguay, but before we knew it, we were back on the ferry. This time it was the one hour express service, and one hour later, there we were, back in the midst of the hussle and bussle of Buenos Aires.
