We left Caye Caulker today and headed for San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, the next island north. It was a sweltering hot day and we were feeling the effects from being on the water all day yesterday so we decided to hide in the shade for most of the day! We managed to cool off with a swim when the sun went down a bit. We decided to stay only one night here as it is a very touristy, VERY expensive place...e.g. we found a painting in a gallery just like one we bought...

For the past two days we have been organising our onward trip (i.e booking a swimming with dolphins trip...sooooo excited!!!!), reading books in hammocks, swimming, eating good food and plenty of it. We have found that the island has an amazing ice cream shop which we have been sampling the delights of, though there was not enough time to sample the 30 flavours that they had. After the Zoo we quickly escaped the city and headed to an Island called Caye Caulker. It was this journey that showed another way in which Belize is so totally different to Guatemala. In the ferry "terminal", we had to buy a ticket at an actual desk from a person in uniform, then we were asked to check in our luggage, and wait in the departures lounge and relax by watching the new on the LCD TV until the boat was ready!! Today, the night in our seriously overpriced dodgy little hotel in the city was made worthwhile by our visit to the Zoo. Neither of us are big fans of zoos and keeping animals in cages, but we had been told so many good things about Belize zoo...including by a wildlife biologist who said they do great things...so we wanted to see what it was all about. It turned out to be a great day and will definitely go down as one of the trip highlights. This zoo really does...

Today was another early start to get our bus to Belize City from Tikal, which is very close to the border. We had planned on trying to stay at the Belize zoo lodge but for some reason our driver wouldn't stop there, even though it was on the way, which was very frustrating as we really didn't want to go to Belize City.
