Today we walked to the cemetery, which we had been told was worth a visit. We had also been told that it might be closed but we didn't have any other plans for the day so decided to head there anyway. We came to an area that was just scrub land covered in lots of rubbish so we were beginning to think that we had been sent on a bit of a wild goose chase, but we had seem some other tourists coming from the direction of the cemetery so decided to give it the benefit of the doubt.
We arrived at a huge gate that was chained and locked but there were two women guarding it who said we could go in as long as we were quick. Among the slightly deserted area and piles of rubbish, we were greeted by a surprisingly beautiful sight. The graves were mostly huge, marble statues of angels, crosses, saints, alters and tombs. Each was incredibly ornate and what you would expect of a very wealthy and famous family. We snuck out quietly, paid the lady a peso and walked back through the scrub land. It was a weird little excursion but nice to see.
We had to catch a bus this afternoon so spent the last couple of hours sitting in a bar in the main plaza, enjoying the shade, a mojito and the sounds of a Cuban band.
Apart from a little more exploring of the city that is pretty much all we did today...I think we tired ourselves out too much yesterday!
