31st January - Stressing all the way to the border over visa stuff because we've heard some horror stories about scams. When we got there it was such an easy process even though we were the only people who needed to buy a visa. We just weren't told what to do until the last minute, but we payed the normal amount (20 dollars) and got a real visa and back on the bus. Rest of the journey watched a pirate copy of 'Prince of Persia' which had hilariously incorrect subtitles. Arrived in Phnom Penh, refused all motorbikes and tuk tuks as we were expecting a pick up from our hostel, once we realised it wasn't coming we walked towards the riverside hoping to find our hostel amongst the most illogically numbered streets ever (a row of streets next to eachother would go 184, 186, 204, 134, 190). One kind man gave us directions through his iphone then told us he was going to fight on the frontline the next day (conflict between Thailand and Cambodia), so we walked the rest of journey saddened and sweaty even though it was 9pm.
Woke up the next day and Hugh had Cambodias whole population of mosquitos dead around his net. Booked bus to Siem Reap, changed money and learnt how to say thank you in Khmer. Visited Wat Phnom temple which a lady called Yaay Penh built - saw her statue placed a few metres from the temple. The temple was elaborate and incense filled but the $1 foreigner only ticket was a big joke. Had lush local food and sat by the lake where a strange giggling lady asked for our water. Another guy ran past playing some sort of game with a pair of flip flops tied to a rope?
After a full english brekkie, proper tea and Heinz beans? we got on the bus to Siem Reap. Stopped off half way for some fresh pineapple and underipe mango. Arrived and shared a tuk tuk with a guy from New Caledonia, 1st time in a tuk tuk, 5 minutes in Hugh's bag goes tumbling out! Classic. Curry then night market, Hugh haggled for some sunglasses but no one is willing to haggle for a ring for Laura.
3rd Feb - Hotel guy seems adament his tuk tuk driverswhere cheapest and the best as opposed to the others who are 'Opium smoking robbers who want t molest women.' Hotel guy was too pushy and tuk tuk seemed pricey so Hugh approached a random tuk tuk in the street, he couldn't speak english too good so took him down a street to a crew of drivers, one of which could speak better english, this was Mr. Sohky our driver for the next 3 days. Got it for cheaper than hotel - hotel man was not happy and still tried to persuade us to go with them, he never really got over this.
