Day 7- Franz Josef-Wanaka- Up at 6.40am-eeewww and had our lovely porridge and toast an a cuppa. Also needed matchsticks to hold our eyes open but they were fresh out of those! We hopped on the bus at 7.30am and off we went (well after two really annoying foreign girls arrived 10minutes late!) First stop on our trip was Lake Matherson- the bus driver said it hadn't been this sunny and clear in the 3years he had been driving so the views must have been good. On the walk to the lake you could see Mt Cook and Mt Tasman clearly (the highest and second highest mountains in NZ) We then walked 20minutes to the lake which was so bright as its famous for reflecting its surroundings! So you couldn't admire it too much or you'd be blinded! we had enough time to sit at the safe and admire the mountains once we'd finished our little hike. So we both had a juice d'orange and Scott got a cookie as he hadn't had one so far today and missed the one's he had had yesterday! Along the scenic drive we then stopped at Knights point which we decided should be renamed sandfly point as as soon as we stepped off the bus we got attacked and eaten alive by the little b*****s and you could feel then biting you too! It sped up the taking photos process and were back on the coach in a flash for cover, but by this point the coach too had been taken over by the dam flies! We then stopped at Haast Pass for more photos as a special one off stop as notmally its awful weather here so you've go to make the most of it don't you! We were running 20minutes behind schedule by this point so our next stop at the waterfall was a quick one. (also full of tourists so i barged my way to the front to take photos- we don't have all day do we!) Back on the and we were waiting for the annoying girls who took their time dammit...don't worry girls we don't mind being eaten alive on this bus waiting for you! Our next stop was 15minutes further on at another beutiful place called Makarora for lunch. Scott had a good bagel and peaches and cream muffin which he rather enjoyed! We were also glad that the sandflys had sodded off by this point- most had probably been swotted by us but never mind! Our final stop was Wanaka which was even more beautiful! Cannot get over how amazing the scenery is here! (hope you guys don't think we're getting old and farty!) Look at the photos before calling us names haha. We wasted no time at all in going to get some scenic photos incase it disappeared over night- we walked for 2hours up up Mt Iron and back. Scott sped off in true jogger style up the hill leaving the wilting sprinter to complete the hill in stages- I blame having fatigue from the hill still! Every now and then Scott would give me a shunt up the hill before walking off again! As much as I disliked walking in the heat (have I mentioned today was warm?!), the view at the top of the hill was definatly worth it. We met a schoolteacher (with a scottish accent) and some school kids at the top who told us bits and pieces about Wanaka, I can certainly see why you'd want to live here- he told us to tell everyone at home that it was awful here so no one else would move into the town- so guys at home- its awful here! We walked towards the supermarket via the lovely looking residentual area and bought our supplies. We bought some creamy sweetcorn to have wit our chicken and jacket potato which looked utterly horrific when we opened the tin later. The rice pudding look really put me off despite it still tasting the same so we gave it to our new roomie friends Gemma and Kev (who we renamed Kev and Bev from that car advert at home a while ago!) who we sat with at dinner. We spent the evening chatting and chilling before we went to bed. We decided to buy an alcoholic beverage for the evening tomorrow night as we have been told that fizze orange is just not cool enough.Day 8- Wanaka- After the two American guys had kept me awake half the night- phones going off and they'd brought ladyfriends back with them from their night out- lovely! We got up at 9.30am, had breakfast and then went on the hunt for the Rippon wine tasting place which was apparently a short walk away and signposted. Well the four of us spent over and hour walking down the side of the lake looking for it. So Kev and Bev had to give up as they were getting the magic bus at 2pm, we said cheerio to them and carried on walking as it was a lovely morning even if I did think I was going to get lown away! We sat doen and Scott wa happy to finally be able to sit there and use his binoculars...they ended up coming in handy as we spotted the building we'd missed for the wine tasting- well hidden dammit! It was a walk up a huge hill but the view was well worth it- vineyard overlooking the lake, picture perfect location to taste wine! At the top of the path was a house which we wanted to steal...or even borrow for a little bit- and drink their wine too...mmm wine! Anyway enough fantasisng! We went in to go winetasting- the girl saud we could only try 2-3 wines- with eeny weeny sample sizes- literally a sip! The most exciting part of the tasting was the words which came out Scotts mouth: "I like this"- I had to sit down hearing this- never did I think I would hear this! So with that in mind we bought a bottle before he changed his mind! We walked back and waved off the guys ont he magic bus who all wanted to stay longer...obviously because they liked us not because they loved the place- haha. We had lunch then played pool- 3 games in an hour and a half...things can only get quicker surely! We spent the next hour walking round the shops which mainly consisted of sports shops, restaurants and some New Zealand crafts full of all sorts! The jumpers I liked in the sports shops started at $300 (150pounds) and went up, even the scaffs started at $90 (45pounds), so we soon realised we were window shopping only! Didn't stop Scott admiring the racing bikes though- he even got asked if he needed any help! No dear if we can't steal a letterbox from Ramsey Street you are not having a bike! We then went into a shop that sold hand made New Zealand souvenirs- had alot of stuff that I liked but it would push my bags weight limit even further over the 20kg mark- so I enquired about the cost to send some stuff back to England from the shop...well I'd have to be rich to do this as it was the cost again for the item (ie $75+$75)- it would have had to have been love at first sight to be allowed it. Never mind. The cheer ourselves up...ok well to cheer myself up I decided we were going to go out for a cheap ruby murray. So we went in search of the cheapest one. When we asked the guy on reception in our hostel what it was like he described it as curry in a hurry- ph how lovely! We shant be going there now then! So we settled for the second cheapest restaurant double the price of the other one but still cheap and we decided to eat in to save on washing up back at the hostel! I don't think we have ever had an entire restaurant to ourselves. We were hoping it was just off season and not the fact it had a reputation to give you the delhi belly!-we hoped it was the first one. At least being the only ones in there meant that you had priority- curry tasted good (not as good as home!) Scotts curry came out a spinach looking colour which really put me off- he liked it though. Back at the hostel and we cracked open our wine we had bought today and watched a film in the lounge- heartbreak kid.
