Walker's Travels in Scandinavia 2017 and others
Cloudy with some rain, 16-20deg, 78km, av. 18.5km/h, tot. 1,083km. Had a simple brekky at the motel and left at 8:25am under ominous looking skies and a gusty (up to 25km/h) side-wind, thank goodness. We sighted our first war cemetery about 20km out at Villers-Carbonnel, it was French. Considering the fact that there are 2,000 purely Military and another 1,000 civilian cemeteries where war causalities were buried there are plenty of opportunities for us to pay our respect. Just up the road we came across the first Commonwealth War Cemetery, at Heath, where lies 985 Aussie diggers. Amongst them are 7 Walkers, which is not unusual due to the common nature of that surname, but what really surprised us was the discovery of a Beswick, (Wendy's maiden name) H. Private in the register. We'll have to research that a little further when we get home. It was then onto Villers-Bretonneux, which just about everyone is familiar with these days. V-B is the Australian National Memorial site for the Western Front, where there's 779 Aussie graves. There's also a remembrance wall with 10,707 names of diggers who died but no trace was found. A very peaceful, inspiring and moving place to be. May God bless the soul of each and every one of these brave men and may they RIP. Today V-B was cold and wet as the rain started when we got there and continued till we arrived at our motel in Amiens 20km later, at 3:20pm. However we put on our complete wet-weather gear and pushed on. Once booked in it was good to get out of all that wet gear and into a nice hot shower. Amiens seems a nice place but it was a little soggy and quiet till the sun appeared about 6:00pm. Another enormous Cathedral, Notre-Dame, 145m long X 70m wide X 42m high, but this one is full of fascinating artwork, religious artifacts and fittings. A great place to spend an hour or so. The Choir was practicing so it was a special time to visit. Dinner was in the motel as there weren't too many other appropriate options available due to it being a Sunday. We enjoyed a buffet starters and for main Wendy had the Penne with sauce & salad while Greg had the whole trout & salad. Very satisfying day, although more sunshine tomorrow would be good.
