Ever since we had left the UK, Nims and I had been more backpacking imposters then real travellers, in Beijing we stayed in a four star hotel, in Sydney City within Rakhee's Luxurious apartment, in Bondi a twin shared room, while in Christchurch. It was only in Queenstown where we felt the pinch on our wallet did you decide to slum it and stay in a dorm room with strangers.
We got a four bed shared room and the first night it was just us. This was our first experience of dorms so we were worried who we would have. On the second night we were joined by two Brazilians, one was called Rodrigo (later his name was changed by us to Rodney) and the other was Leonardo (we changed his name to Loco). The both turned out to be really cool, they loved girls, booze and football, which meant we were all destined to get along!
We spent most of the week checking the town out by foot, mountain bike, chilling on the beach and drinking and playing pool whilst meeting loads of new people, including these two Irish birds who seem to be wherever we go, but they are a good laugh and fun to be with, but it is alway a worry when a girl can drink more then you!
Queenstown is known for its adventurous activities, i.e. white water rafting, bunjee jumping etc. but to do everything would work out really expensive so Nim and I knew we could only afford to do one. Nims opted for the Bunjee Jump from 103 feet over a bridge and I chose teh skydive from 12,000 feet. Nims was really nervous and excited and maanaged to do his jump on Tuesday adn he absolutely loved it.
My skydive was scheduled for Wednesday, out last full day in Queenstown, it worked out more expensive but was something i really wanted to do. I woke on teh morning with butterflies, weak knees and sweaty palms. As soon as i got to teh bus taking me to the site teh driver said there was a delay because of the bad skydiving weather even though it was an amazing clear blue sky with a gentle breeze appartently the gentle 20 knot breeze was enough fo rthe parachute to fly into a mountain or a lake. After an hour wait, we got the all clear, there was another couple ahead of me so waited patiently, the bloke managed to go first into the plane adn do the jump (only room for one jumper on teh plane).
Me and the jumpers wife (who was next) where left on the ground twiddling our thumbs adn praying the wind dyed down. After about 30 minutes of leaving the ground on a plane the bloke managed to land safely with a big smile on his face. They guys then told the girl to put the jumpsuit and parachute on which she did with real excitement, but as soon as she put it on there was another delay. So after waiting for another 30 minutes we got the red light, they said it was too dangerous, the woman fell into a strop while i was more philosophical and told Nims at least i can spend teh 130 pound on booze in thailand instead, always a silver lining. But, the woman was furious and me, nim and the bus driver where trying really hard not to laugh at her whilst she had her strop.
We got back to Queenstown 40 minutes later adn went for a famous fergburger which costs $9 but tasted great. We're sort of glad we're levaing Queenstown now because we have spent a little under a week here and although it is an amazing place i needed to be in a new surrounding. So it is a relief that we are leaving tomorrow and heading back to Christchurh for a couple of days and then bound for SE Asia.
New Zealand is an amazing country and i am really glad i have seen it, i can't imagine any country rivalling it, i think when God drew the world he tuck NZ in the bottom corner of the world and said that this woudl be his playground and i am so glad i got to experience it.
In the past 3 and half weeks i have managed to climb the great Wall of China, have dinner with my friends and family on Sydney harbour with teh bridge and opera house right in front of me, lose my passport, get sunburnt, climb a Glacier, almost die about a thousand times and almost jump out of a plane at 12,000 feet. I now only hope that the SE Asia part of our trip over teh next few months be just as much as fun, especially with the third amigo arriving, hurry up Rik, your drink will be waiting for you!
