After our huge two travel we got to Siem Reap and we all just decided that we would spend the first day in this new unscheduled country resting. We only had 5-6 days to play with before we had to get back to Bangkok, so we decided that we would only do a few of the Angkor temples and spend the rest of the time chilling out in one location instead of stopping and going like we did in Lao.
The City had been really geared up for tourists and all the bars, restuarants etc dealt in the US dollar more then they're own currency, however this suited me fine compared to Lao. Lao accepted there local currency (Kip), the Thai currency (Baht) and the US dollar, which was a nightmare because everytime you buy something with one currency you get change in another currency and at the same time you are constantly working out how much that works out to in Pounds, it really pushed my mathematical abilities to the limit. However, I found Cambodia a much more expensive country then Lao and by the end of it i was glad to get out as they had sucked me dry.
The area we were living within in Cambodia reminded me of popular Costa destinations in Spain or Portugal, in that they had one big street with bars, restuarants, night clubs etc. all lite up with crazy flashing neon lights, and loud music and Police everywhere.
We met a couple of cool people in Siem Reap, including an Argentinian girl called Flora and a few lads from Sunderland and NZ, so we would go out and paint the town red with them. Dan was still hanging out with us, instaed of his mate Matt who had gone to Koh Samet in Thailand, so our army of originally 6 had turned to 4, but out of sheet coincidence we met Thomas, the Italian so we adopted him again, as well as his German friend. Thomas did not disappoint, he has hilarious through out our travels, once again.
We spent the evening of the second day visiting Angkor Watt temple to watch the Sunset. This was a huge task, we had to go almost what seemed like trekking to the highest point to get the best views, and when we got to the top, we had to climb this small temple, which had some of the most narrowest steps in the world and the higher we got the narrower it got, all this in the humid evening with mosquitos everywhere was an exhausting exercise but once the Sunset was quite cool, so for me it was worth it in the end!
We returned to the temples again early the next day to first see the Sunrise over Angkor Watt and then check out a couple of the other temples. We visited a temple called Angkor Thom, which was a really cool temple with strange faces of Gods littered all across it and it was built in such an interesting way with narrow caves and steps entrances, it was like being a kid in a massive adventure park. The last temple we visited was the one from Tomb Raider (forgot what it is called). The lads through this was the best one, but i was a bit disappointed, as it was really just a set of ruins with really large trees. It didn't really rock my boat.
I found the Cambodian people much more money driven and really upfront compared to the Lao people and slightly less friendly and sometimes a bit rude and to be honest i was a bit relieved when we left and was really looking forward to get back to Bangkok, where they had proper roads (without massive pot holes) warm showers and less insects. We took a taxi to the Thai border and then a minibus in Thailand to the capital, it took in all about 6-7 hours, compared to the 12 hours by bus and cost us about 10 pounds each, so we thought it was a cool call.
I am now back in Bangkok, where we met up with Matt again. So the five of us (me, nims, rik, matt and dan) had one more big night out in Bangkok watching the Liverpool vs Man Utd game and the Arsenal vs Chelsea game and we all got really hammered. Matt and Dan were leaving us the next day to go down to Koh Phangan, so we all said our goodbyes and promised to meet them again Xmas Eve, where we would all enjoy a drink together and have Xmas lunch together the next day.
It was sad to see the boys go but it is perfect timing, because Monkey, Minky and Beanz should be arriving tomorrow (Tuesday) so we are all really excited to see them, catch up with all the stories in London and show them the City, which has really become a home away from home, but i can see myself getting fed up of Bangkok in a few days time, the City can have that affect on you. One day you love it, another day you hate it. All i can think of now is the islands, bring on the beaches, but only this time, i have my sunblock!
